Something brass, definitely. I would replace with something clean, round and simple like this or like this. I'd venture to guess that the original pulls were crap, because this one looks like it had the pulls replaced too.

Edit: Another with replaced pulls.

Edit 2: After further research, the original knobs appear to actually be white plastic. Please just replace them with brass.
