For the overall story of the Marvel Universe, post-Civil War:
Then we lead into Secret Invasion:
Which leads into the new status quo--Dark Reign:
The new era is called The Heroic Age. Most books did their own thing for a while, and then:
The next major event spun out of events going on in the X-Men books from about 2005 forward. As a huge X-Nerd, I'm in no position to judge how readable it is for anyone not very familiar with the X-Books at the time. If you want, I can give you an essential reading list.
Similar to AvX, the next event comes out of the stuff going on in the Avengers books by Jonathan Hickman.
Again, an event comes out of another book--Remender's UNCANNY AVENGERS:
It's a big question, but I'll try to simplify it a bit.
First off, this Wiki page lists all the different Avengers books, what years they ran, and all that: http://marvel.wikia.com/Avengers_Comic_Books
The Mighty Avengers trade you got, was it this one or this one? The former is a fairly new series that just started last year, while the latter was launched in 2007 and ran until 2010. It's also kind of a side book, so if you want to read about Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, etc., you should probably stick to the main Avengers series to begin with.
For the main Avengers team, there's a few places you could start. If you want to start with a fairly recent series, go with Jonathan Hickman's Avengers. The first collection is Avengers vol. 1: Avengers World, and it's good stuff. It starts with just the team from the movie, but rapidly expands to include a lot of characters you'll be unfamiliar with at first, but you'll get to know them over the course of the series.
If you want to go back a bit further in time, I'd recommend reading Kurt Busiek's Avengers series. He wrote the book from 1998 to 2002, and it was good stuff. The first collection is Avengers Assemble vol. 1. I'm not sure why they titled the collection "Avengers Assemble", but there's five volumes all by Kurt Busiek, so they're fairly easy to tell apart from the newer Avengers Assemble series.
