Depends on the projectors on eBay, I'd imagine they would work fine but there's always variables like bulb life, how good the previous owner took care of it. What projector is it? :)
You could try getting a cheap LED projector like this or this. My first projector was cheap $100 LED chinese projector from Amazon. It's not good, and it definitely leaves you wanting more (it's 480p, low contrast, needs to be as dark as you can get it, they lie about specs on the amazon page). If you're only using it for a limited amount of time then you're both getting first hand experience with (cheap) projectors and you can always return it later.
Just plug in some headphones or buy some $20 speakers and you should be good to go.

It's not. It's one of those cheap mini projectors. I got it for $50 on one of those review sites.

Edit: it says 1080p but it only supports 1080 but shoots in 480
