There is another book about the incident that is not as focused on the oceanography side as the story side of it. Moby-Duck that was a great read about it.

Wasn't there a container full of rubber ducks that went overboard around the same time as well?

One of my favorite books was about a shipping container of rubber ducks who fell off a boat, opened up and floated all over various oceans via currents- it's a really good read! There's an interesting book that delves deeper into this issue. Granted, it is probably a fair bit longer than it should be, and the author rambles some through the middle chapters, but it's not an issue that seems to get a lot of press.

A large number fall into the ocean each year. Generally, they go unreported unless large numbers (like 50+) fall off an individual ship.
