No, it is not worth it if you are always going to be in a place to set it on a table and use a separate keyboard and mouse. It is really meant for you to deploy quickly without carrying a bunch of other stuff, or uses it on your lap, while provide very decent keyboard experience as the keyboard itself has great traveling for the size.
If a decent keyboard experience isn't that important to you, there are knock off wireless keyboard from Moko with the same from factor you can buy too for nearly half the price. https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-MoKo-Ultra-Slim-Bluetooth-12-3-Inch/dp/B017TU3DVQ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1482857866&sr=8-5&keywords=microsoft+surface+keyboard
keep in mind Moko are not nearly as good as surface cover, but judging from what you said it doesn't sound like you type much. If it being wireless is important to you and you always want a mouse, this might be a decent alternative worth considering.
I've wondered this as well for when you're in bed laying sideways and want to prop your laptop up on a pillow. My Microsoft Lumia has a handy accelerometer disable feature so it doesn't keep switching back and forth between vertical/horizontal and will just stay put.
Disabling the
HID Sensor Collection V2
devices in device manager is not sufficient to prevent the Surface from switching off the keyboard thinking you want to use slate mode. I also tried disabling several of the
HID-compliant vendor-defined device
HID-compliant consumer control device
GPIO Laptop or Slate Indicator Driver
Surface PTP Filter
Surface Type Cover Filter Device
Surface Pro 4 Type Cover Integration
etc...
entries associated with the keyboard to no avail. I think there is an accelerometer in the keyboard itself that you can't deactivate.
One workaround is to use a 3rd-party Bluetooth rechargeable keyboard that uses the same magnetic clips as the OEM keyboard: https://www.amazon.com/MoKo-Microsoft-Wireless-Keyboard-Trackpad/dp/B017TU3DVQ/
I believe these do not have the "smart" accelerometer slate/laptop switch.
That's not true:

Is that the Moco? That is what I have and it is great.
Edit: Moko

They're disgusting?
I mean the thing is covered in cloth basically.
I'd suggest this, but keep in mind it's Bluetooth only (doesn't have connectors) https://www.amazon.co.uk/MoKo-Wireless-Bluetooth-Keyboard-Rechargeable/dp/B017TU3DVQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1539071334&sr=8-1&keywords=moko+cover+surface or just save and buy the type cover
Is this what you're looking for? Or do you just want the case?
edit I also found this.
