With the g-2, you gotta mod that sucker with some
mont blanc pen refill.
If you love the pilot G2s, then you could frankenstein an awesome pen. I found out about it about a week ago, and just got the refills in to make it work today.
If you get some Mont Blanc rollerball refills, and trim the butt down just a bit, it fits perfectly in a G2. I bought these refills, and love them.
Otherwise, I also love the Pilot Precise V5 pen like /u/Super_Human.
I have a hard time believing those pens cost much to produce.
Take for example Mont Blanc.
The pens retail for $300-$1000 http://www.montblanc.com/en-us/collection/writing-instruments.filter.html?&filters=2019618787
Yet the functional writing part costs $15 to replace twice http://www.amazon.com/Blanc-Refills-Rollerball-Point-Black/dp/B00007FJZ0
Even if these were CNC lathed alloys, which is about as fancy as manufacturing gets, I don't see them costing more than say $20 each from a CNC shop, and then gold coating a lot of several hundred pieces this size costs around $1000 at a plating shop (assuming the gold is dissolved and electrochemically bonded, and not solid gold, which it isn't, because that would be heavy and cost more than $1000) , so my guess is a few dollars of gold.
Barclays probably signed a deal with the maker and gets them very cheap.
It's all marketing psychology, I guess. People see a high price, meaning only rare people can get it, and then they want it more.
