I keep a small stash of 1lb bottles, along with a 20lb cylinder or two. My eventual goal is to buy:

  • A propane generator
  • Two 100lb tanks, then gang them together
  • A gas fireplace insert

Then everything can run on the same fuel, and the fuel won't go bad. Why 100lb tanks? Because they are portable- you can swap them out and fill them up remotely, rather than wait for a delivery truck to get to your house.

The Mr. Buddy company sells an adapter hose that is compatible with 20/100lb tanks. It supposedly does not require a filter, because it uses a lining that doesn't deteriorate (which is usually what clogs the opening). The downside is that the hose is stiffer. A 20lb tank can power a little buddy for 5 days on low, or 2.5 days on high. I wouldn't recommend running it for that long though, for fear of overheating.

There's also a little "tee" connector that let's you attach 2 20# tanks at once, which helps with both the freezing and the stupid pressure device built into the tanks.
Said device.
