Have you tried herring/kippers? It's definitely not salmon but it satisfies my cravings when I don't have salmon.

I keep a few Trader Joe's tuna cans in the pantry, but I don't eat it that often due to the mercury and the overfishingedness of it. I buy unsalted tuna. Strangely though, I do eat kippered snacks and they have a good amount of salt. I'm no foodweb scientist, but it's my understanding that small oily fish tend to be a better choice than tuna in many ways. Although, the Monterey Bay Aquarium seafood watch page says they may be overfished, which sucks, they also classify it as a least concern fish. The ol' wikipedia says that there may be PCB and dioxin contamination in baltic herrings (more so in the large herrings that you are unlikely to find canned).
