I just learned that you can buy replacement GameCube controller sticks that fit easily into old 64 controllers. All you have to do is open up the controller, unplug the old stick and plug the new one in, works like a charm. GameCube Style Joystick for N64 Controller

Pretty sure this is the one I bought. It was a while back, but they still work great. And it's not kidding when it says high sensitivity, but I got use to it after a little while of playing.
I recently bought the tribute 64 and am absolutely loving it. I would absolutely recommend you check it out. That being said, I also replaced the stick on one of my original controllers with this and it has also been a solid upgrade over the original. The horipad is typically considered one of the best, if not, the best controller for n64 but keep in mind they're pretty pricey.
