192 Khz is the sampling rate. For reference, most professional audio equipment only supports 48 Khz (CDs use 44 Khz). See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampling_(signal_processing)#Sampling_rate . No idea if google music supports it for streaming (most streaming sources don't). Probably only supported for local files.

You're probably thinking of the bitrate (eg: 320 Kbps) which is used to classify compression in music files, and is never limited by the DAC AFAIK.

Sound is crisp. These are the headphones I've been using at work https://www.amazon.com/NAD-Electronics-NADNADHP50BLK-VISO-Black/dp/B00E1UVXHO . I also have a pair of HIFIman HE-400 's, which I've tried on my phone. Those sound a bit quiet even at max volume, but then again, I've yet to use a phone that can drive them properly. So basically, if you have a normal pair of headphones that don't require a lot to drive, it should work fine. If you're wearing a pair of $400 electrostatic headphones with high requirements, you may want to invest in an external DAC+amp.

Yep, it's compatible with any headphone/headset as long as it terminates in a 3-pole 3.5mm plug. The product does not come with an adapter for turning 1x audio + 1x mic plug into a single 3-pole plug, so this wouldn't work with - for example - headphones paired with an Antlion ModMic without a TRRS to TRS/TRS adapter of some sort.

I use it with my V-Moda BoomPro and NAD Viso HP50.

  • Edit: I'm actually not sure if it would work with the earbuds with in-line mics that come with smartphones, such as the Apple earbuds. Don't have any to test that out.
u/xPurplexAnarchyx · 2 pointsr/headphones

It would help if you followed the provided format.

Otherwise, I think it's probably the best balanced headphone in that price range with a large soundstage, however since it's open-backed it will leak sound.

e: now that you've updated your post I still say the HD598 is a good value but it's open-backed so not an option since you want some isolation.

I'll suggest the Audio-Technica ATH-A900x as it's a balanced option but if you have a smaller than average head you may have to be careful when moving around, however if you have a average/+ head then these should be very comfortable for you.

Alternatively you could consider something like the Nad Viso HP50 which is slightly warmer than neutral.

My final suggestion would be the Mrspeakers Mad Dogs which is another relatively neutral option.

You can't go wrong with either option but the Mad Dogs improve the most with amping followed by the A900x followed by the HP50.

> good alternatives to these headphones with good bang for my buck

I got a chance to demo those Sonys. Can't say enough good things about them.

Also worth looking into Audio-Technica AT-M70X ($223). AT's new flagship monitor headphone with an amazing sound. Definitely gives the Sonys a run for their money, especially with such a competitive price. I might even like them better.

I'm also quite fond of NAD Viso HP50 ($249). Just an incredible closed-back can.

>amp designed for headphone listening, that I can plug into my Macbook pro and that is hopefully less than $100.

Nothing really worth looking at under $100. Maybe Creative E3 ($99) or Topping TP30 ($99).

However, if you save money on headphones by going with the AT-M70X or the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 (which are on sale for like $149), you could put the money you saved towards a better amp/DAC.

So if we assume a budget of, say, $200 for an amp/DAC, you can step up to something like Creative E5 ($189), Fiio E17 ($139) (it's even portable!), or Topping TP32EX ($159). Fiio probably makes the best offering in this range.

Have been using old Beats for a while. Looking to get some actually decent headphones. Came across these on the guide:

Good impressions? Bad impressions? I mostly want something comfortable that sounds good.

I have these NAD VISO HD50s and they work great

u/Mad_Economist · 1 pointr/CabaloftheBuildsmiths
  1. Ha, that's what I ended up going with. And then it was one of one, an two of the other, then three and two, then...

  2. Hm. That'll be a mild challenge, but I think I can furnish some suggestions.

  3. There're a few pretty solid videos showcasing the sound quality. It's pretty alright, but it's quite clearly "through a cheap-ish mic". You don't cringe listening to it, or anything, but it's quite noticeably worse than a "real" mic. On the flip side, much more convenient, much cheaper, and more than sufficient for a potential future streaming hobby.

I must admit, closed, neutral-with-some-extra-bass, and $250ish (accounting for Modmic) is a bit of a tall order. The first thing my mind goes to is [Focal's Spirit One] (http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/focal-spirit-one-page-3), which is pretty cheap at [$180] (http://www.amazon.com/Focal-529102-SPOH-Spirit-One-Headphones/dp/B007AH7YFU). [The sound is on the warmer side] (http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/FocalSpiritOne2013B.pdf) (bass/lower mids leaning), but with a fairly accurate overall signature. Unfortunately, they're not famous for their comfort, being more of a portability-oriented headphone, and to my knowledge their soundstage isn't much to write home about, a negative trait for a gaming headphone.

[Beyerdynamic's] (http://www.head-fi.org/products/beyerdynamic-dt-770-pro-80-closed-studio-headphones/reviews/4320) [DT770] (http://www.head-fi.org/products/beyerdynamic-dt-770-pro-80-closed-studio-headphones/reviews/3574) is another option worth considering, and the [$180] (http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-770-PRO-250-ohms/dp/B0006NL5SM) they're currently retailing for is quite a good price, but there's a bit of a wrinkle: in addition to being fairly strongly bassy (enough so to make their marketing as studio headphones rather laughable), the DT770s [have a quite significant treble boost] (http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/BeyerdynamicDT770.pdf). This "v-shaped" sound is quite different from a bassy or warm headphone, with much more forward electric guitars and other treble sound, but even less forward midrange. The DT770 does have the merit of being quite well regarded for comfort, however, and the version which is presently cheapest is also the easiest to drive, meaning an amp is unlikely to be an issue.

The [NAD VISO HP50] (http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/i-love-these-headphonesthe-nad-viso-hp50) is another fairly compelling option, though at [$300] (http://www.amazon.com/Electronics-VISO-Noise-Isolating-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B00E1UVXHO) it's definitely on the higher end. I believe it should still fit into budget, however. The HP50's biggest selling point is a "speaker-style" sound signature, which replicates the sound of listening to music on speakers (which would reflect some attenuation of treble due to the distance between the speaker and the listener). [Measurements show it to be more neutral than most warmer headphones] (http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/NADVISOHP50.pdf), but most subjective review places it on the bassier side of neutrality. The comfort, however, has been criticized due to the atypical shape and fit.

To be honest, the first headphone that comes to mind in this circumstance is [MrSpeakers'] (http://www.head-fi.org/t/693071/review-mr-speakers-mad-dogs-a-hard-to-beat-closed-option) [Mad] (http://www.head-fi.org/products/mrspeakers-mad-dog-t50rp-mod/reviews/9602) [Dog] (http://www.head-fi.org/products/mrspeakers-mad-dog-t50rp-mod/reviews/9701). The most famous of the Fostex T50RP variants, the Mad Dog's sound has been characterized as on the bassy side of neutral, [which its measurements support] (http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/MrSpeakersMadDog2014.pdf). Sadly, while it's very well regarded for sound quality, and one of the cheapest orthodynamics on the market, the Mad Dog is quite hard to drive, and the amp (and DAC) you'd want to support it would put you considerably over budget.

Beyond these closed headphones, just to be complete, there are a few open headphones which you may want to consider, as your Modmic, judging by my own experience and that of many others, shouldn't have trouble with leakage at lower volume levels:

[Hifiman's] (http://www.head-fi.org/products/hifiman-he-400/reviews/9192) [HE-] (http://www.head-fi.org/products/hifiman-he-400/reviews/8643)[400] (http://www.head-fi.org/products/hifiman-he-400/reviews/6872) is an exceedingly well-regarded headphone for EDM, and in general for that matter. While it would also want for an amp, but at [$250] (http://www.razordogaudio.com/collections/hifiman/products/hifiman-he-400-planar-driver-over-the-ear-headphone-1) for an open-box unit, you've got enough budget space to fit in something affordable. Their sound is typically characterized as bassy, with fairly strong treble, but [their measurements don't show too much variance] (http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/HiFiMANHE400.pdf). They're definitely not neutral, but they shouldn't be too coloured to enjoy a variety of genres. The comfort and build quality has always been a sticking point for Hifiman products, and the HE-400 has received criticism for both, but their price/performance is exceptionally well regarded, particularly at $150 less than their formal average street price.

[Philips Fidelio X2] (http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/boss-philips-fidelio-x2) also definitely deserves a mention. [$300, albeit sadly out of stock for the moment] (http://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2-27-Fidelio-Headphones/dp/B00O2Y2MZG), but very easy to drive, and supposedly one of a fairly small body of open headphones which is well-regarded by bass lovers, the X2 has received some of the most universal praise I've seen for any headphone. It seems like nobody has a complaint about it, other than those who just don't like its [quite blatant bass emphasis] (http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/PhilipsFidelioX2.pdf).

The last option, and one which I must confess some bias towards myself as its one of my absolute favourite headphones, is [AKG's K7XX] (http://www.head-fi.org/t/743280/the-akg-k7xx-massdrop-first-edition-thread), currently on Massdrop for [$200] (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/akg-k7xx-massdrop-first-edition-headphones?mode=guest_open). A rebranded AKG K702 65th Anniversary Edition, the K7XX breaks away from the rather famously bass-light sound of the K701/2 with a [moderate but noticeable bass boost] (http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/AKGK712.pdf). I have a pair of these myself, and while they're no longer my single favourite headphone since I've successfully constructed a pair of ATH-AD2000s in an AD700 shell, they're still easily in my top 3, and a really fantastic value at $200. The K7XX, like the other open headphones here but to an even degree, has a truly impressive soundstage. The K700 series has long been held up as the standard for positional audio headphones, and the K7XX is definitely not an exception. There's an amazing sense of depth and breadth to the soundstage, and the positional audio is pretty darn top notch. They do require (or, at least, significantly benefit from) an amplifier, but a $75 FiiO E10k should viably drive them while leaving room for a Modmic in the budget. They're also one of only a few headphones I've heard that I didn't dislike for anything. Their presentation is accurate, but the extra bass means it's not too sterile, and the neutrality really does flattery any music that you actually do like.

Now, this said, I'm not sure that, if I were just going to listen to metal and EDM, I would choose the K7XX as my go-to headphone. Honestly, for me, that would probably be the time to go for a Beyer, as I find that their particular sound is really excellent for both EDM and metal (particularly the latter). However, if you wanted a headphone which will give any genre a fair presentation, perform well for its cost, be just about the best option possible for gaming, the K7XX is something you should seriously consider it, and with this drop supposedly being the last, it seemed better to mention it as an option than to omit it.

Sorry for the wall of text! I, er, really like audio...

Budget - ~300, Flexible

Source - Galaxy S6, Desktop PC, or Mpow Bluetooth v4.1 Receiver

Requirements for Isolation - More Isolation. I plan to use these in my office and in public

Preferred Type of Headphone - Over-ear/ full sized

Preferred tonal balance - I prefer a more natural balance, maybe some emphasized bass and mids, but nothing crazy. Just some cans that are a pure joy to listen to.

Past headphones - Sennheiser earbuds (old, and not sure which model), Sony Gold Playstation headset

Preferred Music - A pretty wide range, mostly acoustic and alternative (Lewis Watson, Cody Fry, John Mayer). Classic rock (Queen) and more modern rock (Thirty Seconds to Mars, Pierce the Veil). Piano centered classical (Ludovico Einaudi). A bit of EDM/ Pop/ House music (DJ Snake, Kygo, Lauv). Some hip-hop/ rap (Run the Jewels)

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - For my next set I'm really looking for a pair of closed backs that are a joy to listen to for hours, with the best sound stage and positioning (I'd like to use these for gaming as well). I know that's difficult for closed backs obviously, but I have come up with some potential choices:

u/tealplum · 1 pointr/headphones

Came into some money so I'm reposting with a higher budget.

  • Need over ear headphones for gaming/music/music production (Live recording and electronic-techno on FL studio)

  • Isolation is important, and I need them to be closed. I'd like as little sound leakage as possible too

  • Budget: 250-300

  • Running off of my desktop computer, extra points if I can use my Samsung Note 3 on the go

  • I'm primarily going to be using these at my home computer, but if I can bring them around, that would be really, really cool.

  • Sound: I'm looking for bassy, but accurate. I know that's contradictory, but if it's out there, that's what I want.

  • If they have the wire that is removable/replaceable, that'd be sweet too.

Recently I have been looking at the Viso HP50's but nothing else has come up. I know it's a lot of requirements, but does anyone have any suggestions?
u/ibzrg1570 · 1 pointr/Metalcore

Honestly, you're better off asking /r/headphones. I'm definitely not an expert on this topic, but I'll help however I can.

Let's start by referring to the frequency response chart for the M50x (top left corner). The "in-your-face" range for male vocals to cut through the mix occurs around 5 kHz, which are at -25 dB. No wonder vocals sound overpowered. For comparison, here is the same chart for another closed back, over ear headphone, the Oppo PM-3. Like most headphones of this type, they also have a decline from 2 kHz to 5 kHz, but they're only at -15 dB around 5 kHz. As a result, vocals cut through much better. I own these headphones and I think they still sound like the vocalist is standing a couple inches too far away from the mic. If I'm using an EQ, I add a +3 dB boost to get them to where I like. Hopefully that helps contextualize just how bad I personally think the M50x is for guitar based music with vocals.

As far as recommendations go, it really depends on your budget and sound signature preference besides allowing vocals to cut through the guitars. I'm assuming you'll want another closed back headphone and to stay somewhat close to the price range of the M50x. At $400, the PM-3 is a bit pricey and a bit too boring for metalcore. You might like the Fostex T40RP for $140, but they're pretty hard to drive with just your phone or computer, and the sub-bass drop off is noticeable if you A/B with another headphone. The NAD Viso HP50 retails for $250 and has gotten pretty good reviews, as did the Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 which usually goes for $180-200 on Amazon. I have not listened to either of these headphones myself, as I tend to gravitate toward open headphones, but based on my research I would start with those. I highly recommend checking out /r/headphones' daily purchase advice thread to get thoughts from people who've actually tried these headphones or have other suggestions.

I use a set of NAD Viso HP50 and I'm super happy with them. Great bass but balanced overall really well with a surprisingly great soundstage for closed headphones. I don't use an amp because they're driven fine from a non amped source (Surface Pro).

I listen to everything on them and everything sounds great.

I bought them without demoing since nobody best new carries them. It was a risk but I did it based on reviews.

I'm looking to buy a nice set of headphones and possibly an external dac for my first year of university this upcoming year.

For headphones, I'm leaning towards these: http://www.amazon.com/Electronics-Noise-Isolating-Over-Ear-Headphones-Black/dp/B00E1UVXHO

In addition, I'm looking at possibly buying the dragonfly 1.2 dac.

Does anybody have experience or feedback on these two? Much appreciated!

u/kare_kano · 1 pointr/headphones

No, those are Premium, not Pro. They have an open back and will have very poor isolation.

NAD Viso HP50 + BoomPro is another good choice.

Hey guys. I'm looking for some new closed back headphones for around 200-300$ CDN. I want to be able to use them on the go.

Budget - 200-400
Source - My desktop, laptop and phone
Requirements for Isolation - I'm planning to use these on the go a lot, as well as at home, so isolation is pretty important to me.
Will you be using these Headphones in Public - Yep
Preferred Type of Headphone - I think full-sized? Something that goes around my ear.
Preferred tonal balance - Strong highs I think. I listen to all genres but having great quality in my Rock/Metal/Jazz songs are really important.
Past headphones - I currently have Sennheiser HD 558s. They're 4 years old. My main issue with them is the sound leak, lack of portability and occasionally muddy sound.
Preferred Music - I listen to all genres, but like I said earlier getting clear instruments in metal, rock and jazz are the most important thing to me.
What would you like to improve on from your set-up - I think I'm looking for stronger trebles and highs.

Location - I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This means that a lot of US Headphones are going to be a bitch to get past customs, and our conversion rate isn't so strong.

Despite this, I've been able to identify a few headphones that I might consider. I'm mostly looking towards the cheaper ones though.... and especially the AKG and Audio Technicas:
