Stillwell's Naive Lie Theory is supposedly an excellent introduction.

A wonderful source for those that want to know questions better: Naive Lie Theory by John Stillwell

This book is a wonderful read and it jumps into quaternions very early on. It really helps one learn about them and other spaces. Is also a remarkably Easy to access book on Lie Theory — (basic calculus, linear algebra only real read. Having seen group theory before is nice, but not necessary)

I’m about half way through and just love it.

Also, somewhat related, Visual Complex Analysis by Tristan Needham is a ridiculously good and powerful book.

Anyone that has to interact with complex numbers should read at least the first two chapters in my opinion.

Fellow undergrad here, just spent the summer studying Lie algebras. Before you run off and get a bunch of yellow books, I recommend starting with this and then maybe this

The first book is one of my favorite math books ever, great, clear style, and only requires calculus, linear algebra, and a bit of group theory. The second focuses on classifying Lie algebras, which is one way to understand how the group E8 comes up. Since I've mostly studied Lie algebras, this is the clearest way I know how to get at E8, but it might not be the best one for you. There must be a way to understand the group without it's algebra (but Lie algebras arose as a way to describe Lie groups, so certainly understanding the algebra won't hurt!)

Edit: fixed second link
