It all depends on the reflective film that you buy. Some will still allow people to see in at night, plus some of them turn a weird color over time. I wouldn't use lightweight sheer curtains on a door because inevitably they'll get caught when you open it, unless you have them mounted on top and the bottom curtain rods. If you still want to see out, but control both the light and privacy, look into cordless cellular shades. They have the modern look you like. If you don't care about seeing out, but still want the light, you can always put up an opaque window film with or without a pattern.
