Is this the creature you're remembering.
Also the book is Our Universe by Roy A. Galllant.
I actually just purchased the book for like 2 dollars because I've been nostalgia-ing on my childhood bad lately.

Dude. This book? It took me a little while to find it, but my elementary school had this one and it was awesome. It had a picture of some alien on Venus chowing down on the Viking lander.
I search for this book for ages and I cant find, I turn to you guys in hopes of finally finding it and what do you know, amazon recommends it to me. Here it is if anyone is curious http://www.amazon.com/National-Geographic-Picture-Atlas-Universe/dp/079222731X/ref=pd_sim_sbs_b_36
Didn't Jared Diamond write The Third Chimpanzee? I think I read that. My favorite non-fiction book is this. It counts as a non-fiction book, right?^^Ijustreallylikethepictures
If they weren't dinosaur pop-up books or Our Universe, I wouldn't tolerate it.
If it helps in tracking it down, This painting was used as the cover art for the "National Geographic Picture Atlas of Our Universe" by Roy A. Gallant.
https://www.amazon.com/National-Geographic-Picture-Atlas-Universe/dp/079222731X - Beautiful book too.
I loved this book as a kid, is it this one?
There's nothing sweeter than a child's dreams after they've been turned-on to astronomy.
My folks bought me the first edition of National Geographic's Our Universe book when it was published in 1980. Although it's now outdated (recent editions have been updated), I still love flipping through it. It's nothing short of magical!
When I was that age, this book blew my fucking mind, man:

Our Universe by National Geographic
I grew up with this book and freaking loved it!
I cannot recommend it enough. Check it out at a library, love it, and then buy it!
Ever read the book "Our Universe" by National Geographic? I checked that one out way back in the 80's from my school library, and it described hypothetical gasbag-like aliens that may evolve on jupiter. As well as ridiculous aliens with natural ice skates on their feet skating around on Europa.
Edit: here it is on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/National-Geographic-Picture-Atlas-Universe/dp/079222731X
Here's a (gigantic resolution: warning) National Geographic poster that is copyrighted 2002, but I'm pretty sure the "galaxy" graphic in the center is the same as was in the 1980 release of their book Picture Atlas of Our Universe
