When LO was young I found it especially hard to fall back asleep. My body was in an alert state, waiting for her to make a sound. My mind would also be racing with questions, things to research, reminders to self. In retrospect, I think I had some postpartum anxiety. My partner has always been able to fall asleep within minutes. Here is what helped me:

  • Take shifts. I have baby from 10 pm to 2 am, partner has baby from 2 am to 6 am for example. When my partner had baby, I would sleep in a different room if possible and wear earplugs. The earplugs really helped me let go of the alert state and relax.
  • If I needed to nurse LO during partner's shift, my partner would get baby, change her if needed, and bring her to me. When we were done nursing, they would burp her and get her back down to sleep. I would stay in bed and rest.
  • I used guided sleep exercises on Headspace, or I would lead myself through a relaxation exercise. Slowly relax each part of your body, starting with your toes and gradually working your way up to the top of your head.
  • Box breathing
  • Slowly recite a mantra with your breath. Mine was "Rest, relax, and melt."
  • I read books by the Bronte sisters to lull my brain into a sleepy state.
  • If a worry or concern popped into my head, I would tell myself "That is an issue for future [my name]. I am in the present, and right now I am giving myself the gift of sleep. My only job right now is to rest."
  • After I weaned LO, I would take some magnesium and calcium mixed with warm water before bed. It really helps my muscles relax. (It might be nursing friendly, but I discovered it after I weaned her, so I didn't check with my doc.)

Your sleep is precious, and insomnia is maddening. It gets better. Eventually LO can sleep in her own room, she will sleep through the night consistently (when she isn't having a sleep regression), and there will be a time when you can get rid of the baby monitor. This isn't forever.
