> Oh man, now I kinda want to see someone pull this one off.

This witchcraft is pretty awesome

I don't know if this counts as cheap, but I use this and it's great.

u/OmniDeath · 3 pointsr/buildapc

I've had a Netgear set for years and they've always worked in the apartments I've lived in.

Not sure if this is the exact set I have, but it's the same idea.

These work well also.

You can try something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Netgear-85Mbps-Powerline-Network-Adapter/dp/B001AZUTCS

It lets you run the internet through your power lines. You may see more or less success with this depending on if appliances disrupt your signal. The one I linked is pricey but they sell similar devices for around $30.

Perhaps you could use something like this? Works really well for me.

EDIT: There are better ones out there, this is just the first I found.

That's a real thing, other than as far as I know you can't connect a USB device straight into the router. With a RaspberryPi it should be very doable. ...I kinda want to do this now.

Assuming your DSL line isn't faster than 85 megabit, this would suffice:

There are adapters that transfer internet through power outlets. I never used them, but I guess a suggestion won't hurt.

For example; http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-85Mbps-Powerline-Network-Adapter/dp/B001AZUTCS

No, it's affecting my ethernet connection. The wifi in this room has always been crappy, but it's definitely unusable now. Although now that I think about it, my ethernet is via an adapter like one of these. Maybe it's interfering with the Netgear adapter which in turn hits my connection.

u/herotoday · 1 pointr/techsupport

Yes, the PC has an Ethernet connection. That is a good idea too. After reading jmnugent's reply below, I will probably invest in a USB Wi-Fi adapter, but I will definitely remember about AC Power line adapter if the wireless options do not work. And yes, I believe this is just a bit more pricier than WiFi adapter. Thank you for the suggestion.

Something like this is what you had in mind, right?

u/WendigoZero17 · 1 pointr/nintendo

Every person who owns any kind of home console needs to buy a set of these.

Seriously. I cringe at the idea of people downloading 40 or 50 gb games over wifi. Powerline network adapters are worth their weight in gold for gaming.

u/Czcz_ · 1 pointr/buildapc

Well if they don't have hardwired internet you could get them those internet outlet adapter things, like this.

u/Dabamajo · 1 pointr/techsupport

There is a way around by using this
http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-85Mbps-Powerline-Network-Adapter/dp/B001AZUTCS
but it is quite expensive. You could try to move the router closer to you and move anything that blocks its way between you and it.

u/backslashdotcom · 1 pointr/funny

I guess if you didn't know that you can turn your electrical outlets into a home network, this would seem ridiculous and funny.

u/Armaedus · 1 pointr/conspiracy

>that theory falls apart when you realize any black ops project wont be connected to the internet

I don't know man. Check this out. So back in the days of dialup, I had this crazy setup. Some shit I bought at walmart I think. Basically what it did was allow you to use your dialup internet in a room of the house that had no phone connection. Basically, you would plug your computer network connection into a device that plugged into a standard electrical outlet. Then in another room where you had a phone connection you would plug in another part of this thing to an electrical outlet, and then that would plug into a phone connection. So you basically used the electrical wiring in your house as part of your communication connection.

If an AI was intelligent enough, it could, in theory, create a software based modem and just use the electrical connection to get out of the lab.

Looks like they now make a similar contraption for ethernet and WiFi extension. https://www.amazon.com/Netgear-85Mbps-Powerline-Network-Adapter/dp/B001AZUTCS

Get something like this.

Works really well and is available with higher bandwidths.
I switched myself from wireless to powerline after having the same problems and had no problem connecting the first to the third floor. Unusual circuit breaker placement can be the only problem.

u/TheShadowBanned · 1 pointr/xbox360

These work for me much better than wireless. Also, are you running the static IP through your router's DMZ?

u/Radiobamboo · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Related question: How good are solutions like this, which seem to use your house's power wiring for internet?

u/football13tb · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

> good few rooms away

That right there is your problem. Rule of thumb is for every wall or 25 feet you can cut your wifi capability in half. So seems you are doing actually pretty well.

Now I know some people use powerline network adapters and their reliability is about 50/50 whether it makes internet better or worse, might be worth checking into.

On a side note I pay $89 a month for 3mb/s down and 0.75mb/s up so I personally think your just fine.
