People won't really comment on it unless a) they're watch people or b) the watch is notably special from a distance. So if you want people to notice, it has to be pretty flashy. If you want people to notice AND compliment, it should be flashy but still good looking. Here are some of the watches that I think would get good attention:

Something by Tacs (I'm not sure about their quality)

Something with an odd shape, like this Orient which is 50% off right now

Nixon Rotolog (although Nixon isn't a popular brand here)

A watch with a strange movement

Something super-retro like a Zeppelin

Or maybe something that's absolutely bonkers

As my final suggestion, look at these watches under $500. But don't just look at them, zoom out on your browser (hold Ctrl and scroll down). Anything that sticks out to you at a distance would probably be noticed by other people. Then read the review to see if it's a good watch or not.
