You're absolutely right about the apps. That's why we're doing everything we can to break out of the chicken-and-egg loop, and why it's infuriating that so many companies refuse to touch WP on principle (I understand not wanting to commit resources to building an app for 4% of the US market - I think it's like 12% worldwide? - but that's why we have many teams dedicated to making apps for companies like that... and they still say no).

If you've got $50 lying around, you might enjoy toying around with Windows Phone a bit more than you can do in an AT&T store!

A smartphone doesn't have to cost much. You can get a decent windows or android phone for $50 and an MVNO Sim for $0 on PAYG. Then use google voice and WiFi for most of your calls and texts. My H2O plan is $30 and lasts 3 months before expiring with unused minutes.

Edit: for example, the Nokia lumia 635 is $40 at amazon.

I have a 635, you will probably just need to get a new SIM from StraightTalk and it should work fine. I got mine from Amazon....currently a much better price there as well. I should also mention I bought the exact phone I linked to and got a SIM starter kit from StraightTalk and it works great.

Yeah, $49 is still great when you think about the actual hardware you're getting. A quad core CPU with GPS, a camera, accelerometer, etc. Technology these days is amazing and amazingly cheap.

To be clear though, I could buy this guy and not have to worry about ever activating it? I just want to be able to deploy apps to it and test them, that's really it.

And, if anyone is unsure about waiting for a flagship, buy a Lumia 635 and wait. I just picked one up on special from Amazon for $29 and the thing is fast for the price. I could replace my 1520 with a 635 if I had to.

Here you go pop out your GSM SIM card, pop it into this beauty and bam! Got yourself a Windows phone for just under $50. The 635 also supports up to a 128GB Micro SD card while also sporting a removable battery. It's pretty nice for a low budget handset. I actually use mine as my daily driver. Let me know if you have any questions, also feel free to pop over to /r/windowsphone if you need any pointers.

Best deal is here:

Highly rated phone, bought several for family members and they have been happy with it. Plus at that price, it is great. Just buy it, and pop in your Sim Card and you're good to go. If you want an upgrade to that phone, then I'd suggest:

http://www.amazon.com/AT-Nokia-Lumia-635-Contract/dp/B00LBFFSNM/

That adds a quad core processor, a larger screen, and a few other things.

If they are unlocked. Yes you can use them just fine

Maybe you want to look into buying a shell though? The T-mobile locked version requires 40 days on postpaid to unlock.

Nokia Lumia 635 doesn't have one, and it's silly cheap.

Lumia 635 AT&T branded, $48.99 on amazon

It's a pretty low-end device, but it should give you a good idea about whether or not you'll like windows phone. As an added bonus, this particular model supports the Windows 10 technical preview. It's not much different than wp8.1 for now, but if that's your sort of thing, it's there.

I just don't like stuff that looks low quality specially when it's so expensive. Sure it's not as big of a deal as say a phone but you still have text, icons, maps, buttons and other visual cues. The icons look like they forgot to turn on anti aliasing which when you're dropping 1k for a unit is completely unacceptable. EVERYTHING looks better in high res. While it won't make or break you being able to see them when you're glancing for a split second it's a lot easier to have something crisp to look at (guaranteed the first one to drop an HD display headunit will tout "safety" as a selling point). When you're looking at 1080p/qHD and 4k displays day in and day out then you go to look at a WVGA display it looks like shit by comparison. Yeah a decade ago that would have looked sweet but now I've seen better and it's simply not enough. Every other industry has enough competition to force advancement but HU manufacturers somehow decided this was good enough. They don't even offer some more expensive HU with a better screen they just don't have it. The know they don't have it. I mentioned it in the other thread they advertise SUB-pixel count. So instead of 384k pixels they multiply by RGB and advertise 1,152,000 "pixels". Most people don't know any better. I bought a kit with the Kenwood DNX-691 a year ago and ended up sending it back a week later. I was really impressed with the maestro RR integration. You can customize the steering wheel buttons, ODB II gauge readings (ala FF) and even HVAC controls in the head unit. With canbus becoming more common they have the best opportunity now to make systems integrate better than OEM. I was so disapointed I went back to my Mustangs dot matrix display where I can literally count the pixels. I much rather do a dot matrix display than a shit LCD. It's like good steak once you've had it you can't go back. I'd rather eat ground beef than shit steak.

Would you rather they offer it or not offer it? If you don't like it you don't have to buy it but I'm not asking for diamond encrusted, gold plated, 4k AMOLED headunit here I just want a head unit with a better display than this $57 phone. Am I seriously being unreasonable with this request?

Windows phones seriously lack applications. But if staying in touch is the only thing that she is going to be doing this might be a pretty good choice. And you are very right at looking at warranty. Another big thing is ease of use, which this phone has in spades. To get a better idea there are some good reviews on Amazon..

This might be a wise choice esp. if it gets lost or damaged. This price range/reliability is an android weakness.

The only real place I can buy from currently is amazon. I found a 635 for $50. If I go with this one, am I right to think I won't have to talk to AT&T at all and just use the phone out of the box? http://www.amazon.com/AT-Nokia-Lumia-635-Contract/dp/B00LBFFSNM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417444869&sr=8-1&keywords=Lumia+635

Get your prices right. Also, big surprise, a phone without LTE is cheaper than a phone with LTE. Why don't you compare the non-LTE Moto G to the 630?
