I prefer heating the milk on a stovetop, medium low with a cheap milk thermometer off Amazon. Steamed or frothed milk is best between 65-70°c, or as hot as possible without accidentally boiling the milk. You don't have that kind of temperature control with a microwave.
I have this thermometer, it's cheap and it works well enough. I'm very happy with the milk in my cappuccinos. I also use 3% milk or oat milk, and froth using a French press.
