We went from bottle to this type of sippy cup. It is in the middle between nipped and hard plastic. It has a stopper to slow the flow like a nipple. I started by holding her like I was bottle feeding and just used the sippy cup but made her hold it. It only took a few days for her to really understand how the cups work.
They also make a version that has more of a straw with one way flow to reduce spilling. Once kidlett mastered this cup we went to the regular sippy cups.
I tried Playtex® Sipsters® Stage 1 Starter Set Cups, they leak like crazy. Both types. I returned them, they're just awful.
