I will give you some very ballpark figures based on set-up:

  • CDJs and Mixer w/ case: ~$1000-3000
  • Turntables and mixer w/ case and Serato: ~$1000-1500
  • Midi controller and Ableton: ~$600
  • Midi controller and traktor: ~$500
  • Midi controller and DJay: ~$100

Now, keep in mind these really are very ballpark figures as pricing will be highly dependent on where you buy stuff and what model you buy exactly. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for with regards to the hardware, so dropping $200 on a bottom of the line CDJ from numark or something will give you a bottom of the line CDJ that will probably be a piece of shit. Dropping $1100 on a brand new CDJ900 will get you a professional grade piece of equipment.

Also, these prices take into account you actually buying Ableton or Traktor instead of pirating them. Additionally, if you go the Ableton or Traktor route you will need to get an external soundcard which can run you anywhere from $80 to $250 (I tried to include that in my ballpark estimates).

My advice is, if you wanna try it out and get your feet wet, get a cheap midi controller like the korg nanokontrol, a cheap soundcard interface like this one, and download djay.

This is by far the cheapest option as the whole setup will run you about $130, and you'll be able to DJ any party. Best of all, the way djay works you will actually learn to beatmatch by ear rather than relying on a computer to do all the beatmatching for you, which in my opinion is a great skill to learn when first starting DJing. From there if you want to expand your functionality you could upgrade from djay to Traktor and keep your same midi controller and soundcard and you'd still be good to go.

Hope that helps, and good luck, DJing is a blast!

For this to work, you'll need a sound card that supports at least 2 outputs. Usually, onboard soundcards only support 1 headphone out, so usually people buy external USB soundcards. Once you get a soundcard that supports multiple outputs, you can go into preferences for whatever program you use to send the main mix to one output and the headphone (sometimes called 'cue') mix to the other.

Some soundcards that seem to be popular:

M-audio fast track

If those are too expensive, there's also the method of getting a cheaper USB soundcard with only 1 output, and hack together a driver using both the USB and onboard outputs so that the computer thinks it's one audio interface with two outputs. If you want more info about that process, let me know!

(Should have got the Mixtrack with the built in soundcard huh?)

DJ I/0 is the main reason I brought it up to $275.

I could do it for $250 if you pay shipping.

Since you already have the controller, you really just need something with two outputs. One for your speakers and one for your headphones. I would say go with the Numark DJ iO. Its cheap, simple ,and gets the job done just fine.

Haha thanks.
The things I have:

  1. Bose Companion 5 Speakers (these connect to laptop through USB)

  2. Bose Companion 3 Speakers (these connect to laptop through Aux)

  3. Laptop (with Aux and USB receivers, obviously)

  4. Numark Total Control

  5. Numark DJiO

Don't know if the last two will be useful or not, but they may help somehow.

audio2dj is a great card to start with.

if not you can get a numark dj i/o, but I highly recommend the audio2dj over the numark

As others have mentioned what you are looking for is a DVS system. You'll want DJ Turntables like these and you'll need an Audio Interface and a Mixer.

The Audio Interface can be complicated, because the two biggest names in DVS systems are both 'hardware locked'. You can only use them with their specific hardware. If you go with Traktor then the easiest starting point is a Trator Z2, which is a mixer with built in audio interface. If you go with Serato it's easiest to go with a Rane Sixty One which has it's own Audio interface.

That being said, if you aren't planning on trying to go pro you might not need Traktor or Serato and can save quite a bit of money. You'll still need those turntables above but you can use a basic DJ soundcard like this one with an [inexpensive mixer] (http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=115&cp_id=11503&cs_id=1150303&p_id=614320&seq=1&format=2) and use a different software package like Mixvibes Cross DJ - which supports DVS without a hardware locked audio interface. Going this route will save you over $600 vs the traktor solution or over $1000 vs the Serato solution.
