Finding cheap tablets that run Minecraft well is a bit tricky, and finding cheap tablets that may continue to work well for the next few years makes things a bit more difficult. I would only look for devices made after 2014 if possible. Anything before then would likely be worse than your current Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, or may not keep up with the ever more demanding games and apps in the coming years.

It's worth mentioning that there aren't many kid-friendly tablets that would be a significant upgrade from your current device. For example, the Kindle-Fire kids edition, while an excellent first tablet for kids, performs similarly to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 and thus wouldn't be much of an upgrade. The devices I list are meant to be possible upgrade suggestions that utilize better hardware than cheaper tablets geared towards kids. However, some of the tablets I list can make for a great family tablet, and you can find accessories and cases for some of the options that make them more durable from inevitable drops and other accidents that may occur.

---

I currently have 6 tablets listed in three different price ranges that may be slightly or significantly better than your current device. Prices are in USD and may or may not include shipping in the cost. Also, with Black Friday and other holiday deals coming up, I would keep an eye out for other good deals and price drops as well.

Under $200:

  • Amazon Fire HD 8 (2016) - $90 for "Special Offers" version (essentially advertisements), $105 for version without Special Offers. While considerably cheap, it isn't too much of an upgrade over the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, though it's still a good option. However, one major drawback is that this tablet does not come with the Google Play store, but instead uses the Amazon app store meaning all apps will have to be repurchased. It is possible to install and use the Google Play Store or Play Store apps on this tablet if you're willing to follow some technical guides.

  • Lenovo TAB 2 A10 (2015) - $150 for lowest tier model on manufacturer's site. Despite being released in 2015, this may not perform a whole lot better than your current Samsung Galaxy Tab 3.

    $200 - $300 range:

  • NVIDIA Shield Tablet K1 (2015) - $200 on manufacturer's site and Amazon. This device is comparable to the Galaxy Tab S2 in terms of performance, and is overall a very good tablet for its price.

    $300 - $400 range:

  • Huawei MediaPad M3 (2016) - Currently $300 on Amazon. Based on performance benchmarks, this is the best device on this list using some of the latest hardware for a fairly competitive price. Note that it won't ship in the US until November 21st.

  • ASUS ZenPad S 8 4GB RAM model (2015) - $300 on Amazon. While there is a $160 version with 2GB of RAM and a slower processor, reviews say the cheaper model is not great for gaming and tends to lag.

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8-inch (2015) - $350 on Amazon. Samsung previously had deals on the more expensive 9.7 inch version going for as low as $300, so it may be worth watching. This tablet is featured in some review sites as a good tablet for kids in-part because of Samsung's kids-mode feature.

Edit 1: added Asus ZenPad and Nvidia Shield tablet recommendations.

Edit 2: updated the link for the Samsung Galaxy Tab A to include the price-cut model.

Edit 3: added Amazon Fire HD 8.

Edit 4: Removed the Samsung Galaxy Tab A as nearly every device in the list outperforms it for the same price or less, making it a poor deal.

    ---

Sorry if this is an overwhelming amount of information to take in. If you have any other questions, feel free to reply! Also, if any other users have good deals or devices they want to mention, please do!

There's the Nvidia Shield Tablet, regarded as one of the best android tablets released in the last few years. Only $200 new, half the price of an iPad mini, you could probably save a bit and get one used. 8-inch display, full HD, 16GB storage with an SD slot, 2GB of RAM with their K1 processor so it would work great with Minecraft and anything else. https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-K1-Tablet-Black/dp/B0171BS9CG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482420048&sr=8-1&keywords=shield+k1 Only thing is it doesn't come with a charger, but most people have some extra micro USB cables laying around.

get a nvidia shield k1 and call it a day. u really can't go wrong for $200

Nvidia Shield K1

u/HollywoodUpstairs · 6 pointsr/medicalschool

If the rest of your devices live in the Apple ecosystem, the iPad mini is a great device. If you prefer to have the same 7-8" form factor in an Android device, I love my NVIDIA Shield K1. Unfortunately, it's sometimes difficult to find it in stock. The new Huawei Mediapad M3 is another 8" Android device that's getting very solid review.

u/subslol · 4 pointsr/future_fight

I use an nVidia Shield tablet like this. I've been using it for over a year and it works great. Highly recommend.

After looking at it, seems like they're out of stock. Looking around for something similar.

NVIDIA Shield Excellent tablet for $199 (US)

Though it is worth mentioning that this is a 10" tablet compared to the 8" Shield and 9" Nexus 9 (linked above).

u/sniper344 · 3 pointsr/androidtablets

Go with the NVIDIA SHIELD K1 8inch Tablet then it performs great.

u/XANi_ · 3 pointsr/Games

You can buy sub $200 nvidia tegra tablet right now. All switch would have over that is docking station, controllers and (possibly) newer iteration of NVIDIA chip

u/Subiedu · 3 pointsr/vainglorygame

Here's the Nvidia Shield K1 for $200. I bought this mainly for VG and it works great!

Uuugghhhh still one more week of my sucky job. At least now I'm not working too hard to "appear" busy when I'm not. Today is my last late night (I've been working Mondays from 9am to around 8/9pm and it sucks)!

I got my fiance's Nvidia tablet in the mail yesterday. I booted it up and started a new account because they had the Lego Jurassic World game for over half off until today and he's not getting it until next week. Only to discover you basically need the controller to play anything that's not a tablet game. So I ordered the stupid controller and he better love it because geez this is expensive. Had I known this, I would have ordered the tablet and controller together, but it only would have saved me $1. It was my understanding that it had on screen controls, too, but I couldn't find any. Oh well.

I went grocery shopping yesterday. This seems like not a big deal except it has been literal MONTHS since I've properly grocery shopped. We've been scrounging like mole people. I didn't really have the money for it but I'm so tired of not having actual food. But now we do! At least for the time being. And now, with my new seasonal job, my hours are much better. I also feel like I've just been really down the whole 5 months I've been there. I don't feel like doing anything or going anywhere or cooking or anything. Ugh I can't wait until this week is over. At the same time I'll miss working with my fiancé, future brother in law, and their best friend (yes, we all work there lol). And having a desk. But that's it.

Oh, I woke up Saturday morning with an eye thing? It's not pink eye because it doesn't itch and it's not red or anything. It's just swollen/puffy on the lower/outer lid and there's a definite dot of pain. Maybe a stye? It still looks the same to me this morning, but it needs to fuck off because I don't have insurance and idk what I'll do if it doesn't go down.

Has anybody experience with the Shield K1 and CM?

http://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-940-81761-2500-500-SHIELD-Tablet-K1/dp/B0171BS9CG/

I was wondering if the official CM builds work on the K1?

u/TheRealJpaul199 · 3 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

The Switch is definitely not more for less, at least in terms of hardware. Nvidia's K1 Tablet is weaker than the Switch would be since it's using the K1 rather than the more advanced X1. It also doesn't have an internal fan, detachable controllers, Type C, or docking capability.

Nvidia shield K1, $199 in Amazon. Based on the specs it should able to handle higher graphics setting than a PC emulator (Bluestacks 2 highest setting is only at 3)

https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-K1-Tablet-Black/dp/B0171BS9CG

coupled it with this Nvidia Shield Controller $59.99 , then you should be golden..

So you are looking for an Nvidia shield portable.

u/Feisar2003 · 2 pointsr/Android

Amazon.com ships to Aus the nVidia Shield K1, $199 USD (about $270 AUD), a hereditary sucessor to the N7 2013 2nd edition IMO, but it's almost never in stock so look out for it. Goodbye your N7, I'm scared for the day my 2013 bites the dust.

u/JustTestingWithKali · 2 pointsr/Kalilinux

I have spent all night looking for the best solution. My main concern being how well the device is supported by Kali / Nethunter, I thought the range of Out of The Box supported devices was wider. Now I'm also looking for a good price.

Like others have said, the N7 2013 is a bit long in the tooth, and probably won't get updated to Android N. You might want to wait it out, and pick up a deal on the N7 2013, on Swappa, while you wait to see what the holidays brings towards the end of the year in the way of deals, and new hardware releases. The NVIDIA Shield K1 $199 on Amazon is pretty good if you don't want to wait.

It just received a good update.
> SHIELD Tablet K1 now meets Android 6.0 Professional Audio requirements, including:
Low Latency Audio (<20ms continuous round trip)
USB Host & Peripheral modes
24-bit@192kHz Stereo & 7.1 HDMI output
MIDI support over USB & Bluetooth LE

NVIDIA has been doing a good job at releasing updates.

Guys, I'm looking at this right now. Never bought anything from amazon before so mind my ignorance. Does it include the sylus? Or is that an optional item as well?

E se seller for a amazon.com também não passa pela alfandega ?
Do link 1 e 2, existe algum seller que seja seguro e que não passe pela alfandega ou que não fique preso de certeza ?
Obrigado pela ajuda.

You think this is expensive? This is one of the best value/money tablets out there right now... I don't know if you can get better for under 200 unless you forget about getting a 16:9 tablet.

u/Synergy_synner · 1 pointr/gaming

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but the Nvidia Shield tablet is under your $250 mark.

u/lumier2x · 1 pointr/NintendoSwitch

Why are people so surprised? The Nvidia K1 tablet is pushing 8" of 1080p gaming for 200 bucks. Joycons look impressive but not that hard to manufacture. https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-K1-Tablet-Black/dp/B0171BS9CG/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

Am I missing something, or are you selling this exact thing, plus a controller? On Amazon

Shit it went up $37 since I got it last month.

Google it, all the reviews for it are almost all positive. The only downside for some is its WiFi only, no 4G/mobile connection, but I tether my phone. Nvidia updates it constantly, its designed for gamers in mind. No lagging on anything.

Here they are showing it off with games.

Take a look at the Nvidia Shield K1. Great specs and great price.

u/mrkcsc · 1 pointr/discordapp

OK, well since I don't personally have this device for testing - it's hard for me to verify a fix (this was somewhat of a stab in the dark).

What I can do is purchase this device so I can try to reproduce the issue myself.

Can you confirm this is the tablet?

http://www.amazon.com/Nvidia-Shield-8-0-Inch-Tablet-Black/dp/B0171BS9CG/

Once it's delivered I can attempt another fix.

u/fraseyboo · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

The K-1 is the current model, it has pretty much he exact same specs as the previous shield tablet but has no stylus or charger. It also won't burst into flames like the old one.

The K-1 should be the cheaper one (seeing as there's no stylus etc.), at least it was that way when I bought mine.

Search for "Nvidia Shield K1" or click this link.

u/gid0ze · 1 pointr/nvidiashield

Both Amazon and Newegg have it in stock in the US. I've heard other people sayings it's routinely out of stock overseas, but I've yet to see it out of stock in the US. Rumors of an X1 tablet have been floating since the release of the X1 chip, but as the K1 tablet was only re-branded in December, I'm willing to bet it will be for sale for some time in the future. I've had my eye on it for the past month, finally pulled the plug and it gets here today supposedly.

Just letting you know- http://www.amazon.com/Nvidia-Shield-8-0-Inch-Tablet-Black/dp/B0171BS9CG/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

A newer model of the shield tablet came out with the exact same specs, and sells for $200 brand new. It appears that you can get a used one for $130-$170, unless is yours the 3g/what does it include?

u/AsusChrome · 1 pointr/Nexus

It all depends on size. Most tablets are used for reading, videos/movies, possibly gaming, and mostly are used as multimedia devices. The normal goal with a tablet is to deliver a solid display and enough horsepower to keep things going smoothly at that resolution. All of the next mentioned tablets fit this bill. Suggestions-

7in-Nexus 7 (2013) $160 at Amazon

8in- Nvidia SHIELD K1 $199 on Amazon

9in- Nexus 9 $300 at Amazon

10in- Nexus 10 $399 on Amazon

Most Samsung tablets along the lines of Tab 3-4 etc or Tab S2 fit the bill also, but the main problem with these is no android updates and TouchWiz, which slows everything down(IMO).

u/class-actress · 1 pointr/tablets

Hi! You can take a look at the NVDIA Shield:
https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-K1-Tablet-Black/dp/B0171BS9CG
That's my personal recommendation for that budget.

u/solokazama · 1 pointr/IntegralFactor

I play it on nVIDIA SHIELD K1: https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-K1-Tablet-Black/dp/B0171BS9CG

works very well (smooth) and if you want you can hook it to TV (the tablet has hdmi out) + add nvidia gamepad:o

u/tomkatt · 1 pointr/theNvidiaShield

Looks like Amazon has them though, even though the Nvidia site is out of stock.

u/VelcroSnake · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Just make sure you get the K1 version if you do buy one. The previous model was the same thing without the K1 and they fixed a few of the issues it had with the new version.

u/LucretiusCarus · 1 pointr/tablets

The xiaomi mipad 2 is a decently priced device. It runs android so your apps will be usable from your Nexus. I have used it and it's a very good tablet.

A lot of people here also praise the nvidia shield.

Edit. There are also a lot of cheap chinese tablets with dual os (android-Windows) that can also double as netbooks. The quality varies though.
