I've used it on stairs and it's worked great but haven't had the courage to use it on the floors yet as I'm afraid to miss a joist and have an unnecessary hole in the floor.
They have videos of people using it and it works well.
The powder method doesn't work and pediatricians nowadays don't want powder getting anywhere near an infant.
I used this and it worked great. You shoot the screws in from the top and the little tripod thing breaks them off under the floor level.

with great success. The bottom video here:
http://www.123itsdone.com/index.html
shows how it's done over vinyl.
There will be a small hole, inevitable with vinyl, but you might be able to find a strategic spot in the fake grout line, or pattern. But see the video first...
Squeaky floorboards normally just mean that a few flooring nails have worked a bit loose. Cheapest option is usually just to roll up the carpet in the areas where the floor is squeaky and screw down the boards.
Alternatively get some of these special screws designed for just this job. They screw directly though the carpet and are then snapped off. (Here's a demo video)
the second option is far more expensive and finding where the rafters are is a bit of an art if you don't have a stud finder, but it's a good option if you're in a hurry or decide that pulling the carpets up is too much of a pain in the arse.
That appears very similar in function to the Stanley one I have. Although, mine has an LCD display instead of the three lights.
I've actually used it successfully to find not only studs, but also floor joists through carpet (to use something like this to greatly improve the floor squeak.)
In the UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/OBerry-Squeak-No-More-Kit/dp/B0006IK8YE
They make screws designed with break off heads meant to go though the carpet, floorboards, and into the floor joists beneath. So.e just go through the carpet leaving the head on.

Is one type.
I have never had to use them so I can't vouch for them myself.
Have you tried the squeak no more kits? Can’t vouch for them personally, but some people here have had luck. I would very rarely want to replace hardwood with engineered wood. And my bet would be that you go to all the trouble, and they still squeak.
I swear by THIS.

I just moved and had new carpets installed and completely missed this step during our renovation. Can anyone vouch for this solution? https://www.amazon.com/OBERRY-ENTERPRISES-3233-SQUEEEEEK-REPAIR/dp/B0006IK8YE/
Generally, the squeaking results from the treads (the part you step on) moving relative to the stringer or the nails in the stringers. If possible, fix the squeak using something like this: http://www.amazon.com/OBERRY-ENTERPRISES-3233-SQUEEEEEK-REPAIR/dp/B0006IK8YE
If you can't fix it (either because you don't own/live in the house, or you were unable to find a fix) then you're left with trying to walk up quietly. My experience is that stepping directly over the stringers reduces the noise. It minimizes the bending of the treads, and thereby minimizes the motion relative to the nails and stringers. So figure out where they stringers are, and set your feet on them as you walk up. Some stairs are always squeaky, so avoid them. If possible, lean forward a bit and put some of your weight on your hands.
Finally - practice. If you use this stairway regularly, you can probably learn to walk up it silently.
