Ditch the Pi and get this: ODROID-HC2 : Home Cloud Two https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0794DG2WF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_3cE2AbVG04DCT. It runs an arm processor. Also they have an HC1 if you want to use a laptop size HD. NachoParker who runs ownyourbits that created the nextcloud on pi has builds for this hardware. He likes it a ton better than the pi. You can also turn on the pre-generation app and cron job that goes with it but it seems only help with new pics that are added. You want to turn it on before you dump your photo library into nextcloud.
