Favorite board games are Dungeon!, Axis and Allies, Settlers of Catan, Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, Scrabble and Shadows over Camelot. I also recently finished playtesting a couple dozen games for this weekend's Boston Festival of Indie Games, and discovered some great new titles; if anyone's in the area they should go to the show and play!
My favorite D&D character has to be Weslocke, the human cleric I play during the memoir sections of Of Dice and Men, for obvious reasons. But if I have to choose a character aside from him, it might be Sir Howland the Wolf Knight, which I designed when I was about ten years old, and is the most ridiculous example of a Monty Haul character imaginable.
Of dice and men is a good one. Here is a amazon link : https://www.amazon.com/Dice-Men-Dungeons-Dragons-People/dp/145164051X/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1539740791&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=of+dice+and+men&dpPl=1&dpID=51lT3P8oM6L&ref=plSrch
For anyone who hasn't read it, I highly suggest that you check out [Of Dice and Men: The Story of Dungeons & Dragons and The People Who Play It] (http://www.amazon.com/Dice-Men-Dungeons-Dragons-People/dp/145164051X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425402526&sr=8-1&keywords=of+dice+and+men).
It's great!
Someone else has suggested Playing at the World. However, you should be warned that its very detailed and quite long. If you want a lighter history, I'd suggest Of Dice & Men. Also, a biography of Gary Gygax called Empire of Imagination came out recently. I haven't read it yet, so I can't give an opinion on it.
Your podcast sounds fun! I love watching (listening?) to newbies playing for the first time!
“Of Dice and Men” is the name of a book about the history of D&D. It’s a pretty great read and runs through a brief history of gaming in general before getting into the story of war gaming in the 60s and how Gygax met Arneson. I highly recommend it!
