I love those drives for anymore traveling or who feels they may be moving the drive a lot. I have two friends both in the Army I recommended the drives to, but one of them has had issues with her drive and the USB connector. Luckily it was fixable with a little work. I personally use this drive for all my backup and support work. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00829THO6

I specifically recommend it because once you remove the USB 3.0 connector, which just pops off so you can switch to thunderbolt or whatever, it has basic sata connectors. So if by chance the USB 3.0 port fails its easier to replace or repair and you can pop the drive right into any sata ready desktop to pull your data if need be.

I went on a 5 month trip, and brought along a small Firewire hard drive (my Macbook Pro doesn't have USB 3, so I went with FW; a USB drive would work too, esp. if you have USB 3) which I backed up to, along with a compact Blu-Ray burner. I kept the hard drive with me, and mailed blu-ray discs back home every month or so, in case the hard drive crashed/got stolen, etc.

I was shooting stills on a camera that makes big files (raw files are around 25mb) and shooting video, so that's a lot of stuff (SD cards alone wouldn't do it, plus I wanted backups in more than one place).

A lot of people recommend this drive for traveling, but I got a less expensive one that isn't so rugged, and didn't have any trouble: http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-Rugged-Firewire-Portable-301984/dp/B005C2BNJI/ref=sr_1_6

Got one similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Backup-Portable-External-STBU1000100/dp/B00829THO6/ref=sr_1_2

And I got a BD-R burner similar to this:

You'll need to bring blank discs with you if you go this route, as it's not so easy to find blank BD-R discs on the road.

I got the normal backup plus since it has USB 3.0 compatibility which is perfect for my retina macbook and it works perfectly. The only complaint I have is that the included cable is quite short. If you have USB 3.0 ports, I recommend getting the normal one and you can just format it in OSX Journaled, but I also believe it comes with a driver for NTFS use on a mac so it'll be compatible with your mac as well as any Windows PC. If you don't have USB 3.0 ports, you can just get this one and it'll work right out of the box!

No, my external is just a normal Hard Drive. (this one to be exact: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Backup-Portable-External-STBU1000100/dp/B00829THO6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397972377&sr=8-1&keywords=seagate+backup+plus)
Also I don't understand your question. If you're using an external, why are you downloading anything off it to the mac's SSD?

I use this

You will need a Y cable.
