My taste in books and authors is constantly undergoing change. I could name a hundred and not cover the subject, but these are the three I've returned to most in the years since I've read them. All three well worth discovering if you've not done so yet.
If you ever get a chance, read One Summer by Bill Bryson, it takes a look at all the goings on in America during the summer of 1927. There are a lot of things that shaped this country highlighted, but the Ford $5 a day wage was part of it. At the time Ford had a 370% turnover rate and the $5 was an effort to keep employees on the lines as opposed to walking off when they got fed up.
I'm a BIG Bill Bryson fan. Really like everything he does. Just finished listening to him read his own book called One Summer: America, 1927
There's a whole chapter in Bill Bryson's amazing book 1927 about this. The Ford stuff is a story of ego, mismanagement, racism, and hubris. Actually, the rest of the book is about that stuff, too. Definitely worth a read if you want to learn more about it.
