ADVANCED OPTICS: Featuring an optimized design, this lens uses a series of 6 optical glass elements (one SD super-low dispersion) in 5 groups to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the aperture range. A high definition anti-reflective coating suppresses lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity.SUPER ZOOM: 650-1300mm or 1300-2600mm with the 2x converter, this lens is not only a superb long range choice, but also performs well in a variety of scenes from sports and surveillance to lunar shots.SOLID CONSTRUCTION: Full metal body and rear mount allow this lens to withstand wear and tear much better than plastic lenses while commanding a rugged, solid feel when using.MANUAL FOCUSING: This lens has preset f-stops that correspond with the focal length at which you are shooting. An index for distance and diaphragm scale is inscribed on the lens barrel to coordinate focal length and aperture.COMPATIBILITY: Can be used on all Nikon APS-C and full frame cameras including D7500, D7200, D7100, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100. though these are not the same quality of your tipical lenses, i guess its not going to be worse than the p900 and its not going to bankrupt you https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Camera-Photo/Opteka-2600mm-Definition-Telephoto-Nikon-D300S-Digital/B001GKPOJK/ref=pd_sbs_107_9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=M7QMXHC0Y093S51N4DWX

So I, along with many other people, I am planning on going to and photographing the August eclipse. I have been reading up and I realized that my current 55-300 Nikkor (Edit: On my Nikon D5100) lens wont be enough to get the pictures I want. I was curious what my options are to increase my zoom range. I am willing to spend $200 or so, but less would be better considering I still have to buy a solar filter (Any recommendations? At a loss for what I should get here as well. This is what I was looking at)

Should I get a 2x teleconverter? In which case which should I get?

Or would it just be easier to get a telephoto lens such as This. The only thing about this is I don't know how decent the quality would be and much less if I'd ever use it again after August 21st.

I would like to start using a (cheap) telephoto lens as a "digital spotting scope" when at the range.

I have exhausted my research online attempting to figure out the effective magnification I could accomplish at different focal lengths. If anyone has a chart or something that shows this it would be greatly appreciated.

I own a Nikon D3300. I have a 6-24x50 Scope on my rifle.

I will mostly be operating between 100 and 600 yards with a stationary view (fixed on a single target). My goal is to have a more magnified view of my target than the 24x scope can provide (at longer ranges).

I am looking at two lenses right now; a 500/1000mm and a 1300/2600mm.

Are either of these reasonable choices, and is the price difference worth the extra focal length of the bigger lens? Is there a recommended alternative? (And again, is there a chart or example of the magnification amount for different focal lengths?)

OP! Fellow photographer here! If you're looking for a powerful telephoto lens that isn't $2,000 check this out: 650-2600mm telephoto lens on Amazon around $200

Huh? You could buy a lens that is longer and higher (though still low) quality for a third that much.
