I've been taking 10mg escitalopram for 1 year. Over an 8 year period I've tried many anti-depressants, and I can say that escitalopram has been the kindest to me regards effectiveness and side effects.

Personally, the long term side effects of escitalopram have been insomnia and decreased sex drive. Decreased sex drive can be overcome by trying 500mg/day gelatinized 5:1 maca root (rainforest foods maca root is very good http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rainforest-Foods-Organic-Maca-Root/dp/B004I4DTAM).

Insomnia, I'm afraid, was more difficult to combat. Unfortunately I had to resort to zopicone, etizolam, valium and phenibut, to help my sleep problems.

Recently I've reduced my escitalopram dose to 5mg/day and have noticed an improvement in sleep and sex drive, but I have also been taking 500mg/day maca root and 100mg/day 5htp, so I'm unsure as to how much the reduction has helped combat these side effects. But, I must say, I've definitely noticed a reduction in 'brain fog' and general indifference since reducing my dose.

Good luck with everything. If I could give you any firm advice, it would be to keep a close check on side effects and after 12 months, under guidance from your doctor, try to taper to see how you feel.
