For chunkier babies, Thirsties offers a good, flexible diaper cover in various sizes. I use covers and OsoCozy prefolds and have found that they work better for my babies than pockets. Sometimes flats are a better option than prefolds because you can customize the fold more to avoid some leaks. Totally up to your preference though.

I don't see why not, people use old receiving blankets so that's basically the same thing. These are the flats we have, and they fit my 2-year-old very nicely. It says they're 27 x 27, but I know the ones we have aren't quite square, so they must have shrunk up some.
