To me the NEX 5N doesn't "look like a serious camera". It has good quality, sure, but you can't wave it around at get any authority out of it.

If you must use a small camera, perhaps use a Panasonic G5 and put an external flash on it, or a microphone.

Sorry to repeat myself, because I'm pretty sure you get it, so I guess I'm typing this for other readers. On /r/photography we always seem to want to get 'best image quality', sometimes people argue that they would rather trade some quality for compactness because "the best camera is the one you have with you", but I haven't seen anyone bring up aesthetics as anything other than "hipster garbage" before.

So anyway:

It seems stupid to need to "look professional", but it doesn't matter how sharp or clear your images are, if you can't get the shot. If people don't have the right expressions in your photos, (or in your interviews if one were taking videos), if they're thinking "why is this guy wasting my time asking me for a photo/interview?", it will show on their face, and in your photos. And asking them for a second photo because they looked annoyed in the first photo... well, that's just going to annoy them more.
