An electric could also be a solution for you. I use mine all the time and have had it for over a year at this point with no problems. I still default to a razor if I dont use the electric for a week or so (just like you would for your face).

I use this electric razor.

Just an option

>That's interesting. What model of electric razor did you get? Sometimes people come around here asking for recommendations, so it would be good to know. Do you use lather with it or does it just need water?

>EDIT - Also, if you want to get rid of your old shaving gear, you can try listing it for sale on /r/shave_bazaar.

I ended up with the Panasonic ES-LA63-S Arc 4. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002N5MHLU/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_-eXVtb0HQAEF2

For 'wet' electric shaves (a misnomer really-- most need a lubricant like soap or gel), I love the Gillette Fusion ProGlide gel: http://m.gillette.com/en/us/products/shave-gel-and-foam/fusion-proglide-shave-gel/irritation-defense-shave-gel.aspx Because it's fairly transparent, so you can easily see the skin. I found for even razor blade shaves, it provided better lubrication than a soap lather, but it tends to dry faster (so going in zones worked the best, or wetting a bit).

I have pretty coarse hair, but also sensitive skin on my face and neck. I think the electric just ended up irritating less than the blade. I can't even count how many different iterations of shaving materials and technique I've gone through to finally figure out what worked for me! Only took 15 years! :D

But I did enjoy the 'process' of the blade shaves for sure! I still do it from time to time.

Neckbeards are usually grown because shaving every morning is a pain in the ass. Go buy him a good electric razor, sit him in a chair, and kiss the back of his neck while you shave the front for him the first time. Once he realizes that shaving is worth the effort, he will consider make it a habit.

Make sure that you get him a GOOD electric razor. A shitty one will just pull hairs and piss him off. I personally have two. This one is awesome but a bit expensive. This one is also awesome and much more affordable.

The Panasonic Arc 4 is my go to. I've had great smooth shaves with no irritation when I was using it. Now I'm on month 2 of growing my beard out.

Very well made piece of kit.

I've always been most pleased by Panasonic shavers. Amazon has this one for about $115 after applying their $20 coupon (retail is $300).
