For entry level the Pentax K-r was the most bang for my buck. It also has some really nice features, like in body stabilization. The back catalog of lens is unbelievable, and they all work. I can mount a lens on backwards and it will still meter. It also comes with a in body focus motor, you need at least a D7000 or D90 to have that on a Nikon. In my hands it feels like a solid camera, but is still very light and nimble. And I have yet to buy one, but I am drooling over those Pentax Limited Primes and that 40mm Pancake. I am hoping to upgrade to the model that follows the K-5 for the weather resistance and pro features in a couple years.

Edit: Pentax are just as capable of a camera as ASP-C sensor size Nikons and Canons. Pentax does not currently make a Full Frame but since Richo purchased them they claim they are going to "bridge the gap."
I use the 18-135 wr and the 40mm pancake len on my ks2. you can get both used for about 400$
