They're easy to make yourself! You just need perler beads, a pegboard and an iron. :)

Thanks! The beads are called fuse beads, you can get a big container of them for $14 on [Amazon] (http://www.amazon.com/Perler-Beads-11-000-Count-Multi-Mix/dp/B0002YM0H0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1369068614&sr=8-2&keywords=fuse+beads), I actually went one bigger and bought the [22K] (http://www.amazon.com/Perler-Beads-Count-Multi-Mix-Colors/dp/B000ZDME7Y/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1369068614&sr=8-5&keywords=fuse+beads) container for $19. You'll also need a set of [these] (http://www.amazon.com/Perler-Beads-Clear-Square-Pegboards/dp/B005HZ35FK/ref=pd_sim_t_2), I bought this 4 pack so I could make more at once since they take a little while to cool once you've ironed them, but a [two pack] (http://www.amazon.com/Perler-Beads-Large-Square-Pegboards/dp/B000O5HGI0/ref=pd_bxgy_t_text_y) would be suffecient. As to how, I google searched for "8 bit Zelda" and found most of them the items that way and designed a few others myself... once you have them item sorted out, just build the square around it and you're all ready to iron! It was really simple, just time consuming. If you want, I can email you pictures of each one and you can just copy mine!! The only thing you have to do that isn't completely obvious from looking at the pictures is to glue a square of felt to the bottom to keep mosture from getting on your table. You can grab decent size pieces of felt from Walmart for 15 cents a piece :-)

It is just a standard jar I picked out at hobby lobby that was a hard edged cylinder. Lucky for you I posted a write up in /r/metroid. (I probably should have sold them as kits!)

PARTS LIST:

  1. It starts with making a baby metroid perler. You can find the original sprite at the spriters-resource Pick your favorite!

  2. Pick out the colors you require. Here is a handy chart. You can get perler beads at most hobby stores (Joanns, Hobby Lobby, Michaels)

  3. Acquire pegboard. here's an example It comes with parchment paper. follow the directions for melting with standard clothing iron (Steam setting should be off)

  4. Pick out jar. Choose cylinder with hard edges.

  5. Acquire Water beads here. Note that you only need 1tsp for 16-20oz. They expand 300x their size.

  6. Fill jar 1/3 full of water beads and place baby metroid centered in and level in the jar.

  7. Fill remaining portion of jar with water beads so the sprite stays still. Now fill the jar slowly with bottled water so all voids are filled. Go ahead and give it a couple taps / shakes for the bubbles to be released.

  8. Pick up base light. I really recommend this one. It has a rubberized sleeve that has good tacticity so the jar won't slip off.

  9. ENJOY!

Yep, I bought mine at Michael's. I can't find the exact ones on the Michael's website, but here they are on amazon. They work great and you can keep adding on more.

I want to try something new, I'd love to start making perler bead sprites but I'd need the pegboards to even start! I'd love to learn how to make things like this for my friends and I!

You can get little peg boards to stick the beads on, then just use a blown up picture of the sprite as reference as you place the beads. Then you put wax paper over the beads and iron them so they heat up and melt together. The beads are called perler beads.

From the same places, you can get something like this, and they lock together for larger projects. Faraligator was the only one I've done so fare that's required more than one, although I've needed to flip projects from one board to the other because I started too close to an edge. Other non-party sprite projects tend to require at least 4.
