Well gosh, thanks! Just trying to share some love.

Truth be told, I am carrying... please hold I'll check my bag... eight notebooks at the moment. They are all different and have different uses.

I use the mini ones for projects (one for ideas for my Raspberry Pi, another for Adobe Lightroom thoughts and tricks), both regular Field Notes, grid. One is for ideas for the house, which happens to be the Expedition (because OMG dot grid!). A nicer Cahier for a project to be gifted at some point, and an aforementioned Wal-Mart el-cheapo for making a note, tearing out, and handing to someone.

Then the more durable Colors FN, a new page for every day, just my running task list (deposit check, get groceries, fix window screen, etc.).

Next, I have a notebook for work (I'm an engineer) that is a promo notebook branded for Wonderware, and try as I might, I can't find them anywhere commercially (but I'm pretty sure it's this, in black). They are PERFECT. Stiff board covers, pretty good paper, double ring binding, perfect for walking around a plant and taking notes. I'd order a box of 100, maybe. I'm on my sixth one, and the vendor won't give me any more without taking more training, so I'm SOL. I did buy this as the next-in-line replacement, though, and am excited to try it out.

This is my current journal (orange, medium), just for me and all my thoughts and shit and rants and y'know - journal stuff, and it comes with me everywhere. Been using it for over a year and it's a champ. I had to tape the corners back on with gaffer's tape. It's been halfway around the world, sailed the Carribean for a week in the salt spray and sun, been wet and dry and wet and tossed around. I would absolutely buy it again except the most awesome secret santa /u/leinistar sent me THIS ABSOLUTE BEAUTY in the Pens and Stationary exchange and I squealed like a 10 year old girl (I'm such a sucker for dot grid, f'real). Anyway, back to the Piccadilly - it takes ink like a mofo - just got a Pilot fountain pen that just gushes and generally bleeds through everything (even my work notebook- sniff) but this book takes it like a champ.

Bonus: Recently saw this website and consequently picked up this notebook. Decent price, great concept, but absolute shite quality paper and covers. Disappointment, but I'll still use it. I had to go through nine writing utensils before I found an acceptable compromise of not-bleed-through and not-paper-scoring. (Pilot G-2 0.7mm, incidentally)

Have you tried writing with a fountain pen before? You can use an extremely relaxed grip with them and have no problems putting down clean lines. I recommend a Pilot Metropolitan or a cheap Chinese fountain pen to try out and see if it helps with your cramping. If it doesn't work your only out about 13 bucks at the most if you can't return it.

I must say, this turking thing is turning out to be fairly productive. I've managed to make enought to buy a new fountain pen and will soon have enough to get that bottle of Pilot Iroshizuku Kon-Peki Ink that I've been wanting and love. Summoning /u/TheBlotterOfInks24 to share the news!

Hi there! Welcome to /r/fountainpens! As a FP newbie myself, I hope I might be able to lend a little helpful advice on your search for a first pen. :)

Jinhao pens, I think most people would agree, are fair performers, and their costs at pennies on the dollar are quite attractive. A piece of advice, though: if you don't mind waiting for a Jinhao pen to be shipped from Asia, try eBay. You can almost always find their pens for a third of the cost as a US-based retailer, if not less. Here's the 159 for $4.50, for example.

Interestingly, many other Jinhao pens are also available on eBay for even less than this one. There's the 156 for $3, the 750 stainless for $3, and the X450 for $1.50, among many others.

Of course, any Jinhao pen you buy will not come with ink. You'll need ink to write anything with any pen! If you're after black ink, you could buy the Noodler's Heart of Darkness bundle, which is a bulletproof ink (which means it has properties that make it difficult or impossible to alter after it's dried on paper) that comes with a decent pen.

The Pilot Metropolitan deserves a nod here, too. It's a heavy pen (as it's made of metal), but some people love that premium feel at this price range. $13 shipped. If you don't like the zigzag pattern on the grip, Parker makes other models. Just search Amazon for the Pilot Metropolitan.

You might also consider the Parker Urban kit from Parker. $40 is a bit steep compared to the Jinhao and Noodler's kit, but it comes with everything you need all in one package. Some people don't much care for the Urban because it uses a proprietary converter mechanism (for filling the pen), but bah, humbug. It's a solid performer and is still easy to fill, even if it does fill differently from other pens.

I'll echo some general advice I've seen on these forums: Lamy pens aren't bad, but they tend to be overpriced. You'll run into lots of Lamy models if you do an Amazon search and filter by average review rating. They are highly reviewed pens. It's worth checking them out if you get more interested in fountain pens, but for starting out I'd recommend one of the units above.

Lastly, if you're feeling luxurious, you might be interested in the Massdrop sale on the Conklin Stylograph Mosaic. This little guy is $55--way more than the $12 Jinhao you started with--but it's also in a different kind of class, more a collector's item or a nice pen than simply a serviceable one. That $55 price tag expires today, and the regular price is closer to $100. I'd recommend a different pen for starting simply because this one is more expensive, but I also thought I'd let you know just in case because the deal is gone after today. :) There's no referral on that link. If anyone would like to help me with Massdrop referrals, my referral link is below.

The world of fountain pens is big, and I'm just getting my feet wet myself. I hope you find the tips here useful. :)

Why? - No massive reason, a bic will still write the same words. I got into it because I can write faster and neater with a fountain pen and once you get one it spirals from there. You then get into different inks, nib, styles and you start writing for the sake of it. If you get hooked you'll never go back to a normal pen. Plus once you have the pen you only need to get ink which is cheap and lasts for ever, so it is better for the environment and can be cheaper than buying disposables.

Entry level? - Yes a lot of pens that write really well can be bought cheaply, I'll list a few entry level pens

  • Lamy Safari - $25 - Solid plastic construction, will not break unless you run it over with a big truck, the nibs can be changed to suit you style, so you can go from an extra fine to a 1.9mm for about $5 a peice. It also comes in many colour combinations.

  • Pilot Metropolitan - $18 - Metal pen with awesome Japanese nib, for 18 bucks you will not get a better writer. The pen is weighty and looks a lot more expensive than it is. Many different designs and nibs can also be swapped.

  • Parker IM - $25 Known brand and a great all rounder. Metal pen with a smooth stiff nib, looks classy and will not break. A really good beginner pen.

If you don't mind a wait for your pens I reccomend some Baoer pens from Asia, the cost a few bucks each and take a while to come but are great writers and if you don't get into the hobby you won't have wasted your money. I have all three listed below and they perform on par with my more expensive pens. Mine took 2 weeks to arrive in the UK and you will also need to get some ink as they don't come with any.

  • Baoer 801 = $5

  • Baoer 388 - $8

  • Baoer 717 - $6

Check out the Pilot Metropolitan with the F nib. The fine nib on this pen is very much a extra fine nib on other brands (ie... Lamy EF = Pilot F) I purchased mine from Goulet Pens for $15...

The price is all over the place on Amazon from $15 to $20 depending on the design of the barrel...

On Goulet they are $15 across the board.

So final price will depend on if you qualify for free shipping from Amazon since Goulet charges 5-6 bucks for shipping. <--- Seriously though, the best packaged order I have received from any company... and bar none the best customer service Ive ever had.

you can get one for about $15 off Amazon. Depending on where you live, it might be easier to buy it retail than from someone, because of the shipping costs.
