You’ll probably think I am nuts, but I am currently taking/using the following:

  1. Prednisone at 60 mg daily (first time I’ve ever had to take it)
  2. Lialda (mesalamine) at 2.4g daily
  3. Apriso (mesalamine) at 1.5g daily (paying out of pocket because my insurance doesn’t cover it)
  4. A nightly mesalamine enema
  5. Visbiome at 225 billion CFU daily (the only probiotic available in the US shown to help with ulcerative colitis in scientific studies; formerly called VSL#3)
  6. Wheat grass tablets at 21 tablets daily, based on results from this study
  7. A nicotine patch at 14mg daily based on these studies; I consider the “harmful effects” personally tolerable
  8. Bupropion immediate release at 100 mg three times daily, because of its ability to lower TNF-alpha
  9. Curcumin at 2.6g daily based on this meta review
  10. Rutin at 1.8g daily based on weak evidence of its effectiveness in rats
  11. EGCg at 400 mg daily based on good evidence of its effectiveness in rats
  12. DHA/EPA (typically sold as “fish oil”) at 1080 g DHA and 540 mg EPA based on good evidence of its effectiveness in humans.

It’s mostly gotten my current flare under control. I now have one well-formed bowel movement a day with no blood, but I am still suffering from left-side abdominal pain most evenings and some days. I started out being totally debilitated by the pain and having significant blood in my stools; that went on for eight weeks as I started with just Lialda, then added the enema, then added a nicotine patch, then the DHA/EPA, and the prednisone, which only made stuff worse (much more blood) over the next two weeks. I started researching basically everything else that is available, and picked everything that had almost no side effects and gave it a shot all at once (nothing to lose!), and it seems like maybe it’s working (knock on wood). This past week I’ve had three days that were largely pain free.
