is it God, or is it "God" as the Big Other which destroys the world in fire, precisely by not existing? That's a matter of interpretation, of course, but yeah you're right that there's a bit of a disconnect there.
I haven't yet read all the way through Pious Nietzsche, but I understand the basic premise to be that Nietzsche, though accused of being a dirty secularist, is actually so deeply religious that it goes overlooked. I've thought very similar things upon reading Nietzsche's work, but none of my professors agree--it seems to be an odd, but (IMO) completely tenable position.
Depends on where your interests land & what kind of Christianity you're talking about. But there is a lot of interesting work going on on the more continental side of philosophy of religion viz. post-structuralism, phenomenology, postmodernism, apophatic theology & atheology, etc:
Since you've been reading Nietzsche, maybe search around for 'death of God' guys? Vattimo is one -- e.g. for him, the death of God is a self-emptying in Christ - God turning things over to man - so the aim of Christianity is to develop a more secular society.
My two solid recommendations based on your aforementioned Nietzsche reading: check out Bruce Ellis Benson's books Pious Nietzsche: Decadence and Dionysian Faith and Graven Ideologies: Nietzsche, Derrida & Marion on Modern Idolatry.
