Well, I was thinking of the Spellplague, but I haven't read Empyrean Odyssey yet, I'm not sure about its contents. I'm not too keen on drows myself, though I guess the War of the Spider Queen books were entertaining enough and I'll check the Empyrean books out at some point.

Another series that deals with the Big Happening™ is Abolethic Sovereignty, which I also haven't read yet, but it wasn't particularly well received. Oh, and The Ghost King, quite decent, IMO.

And I'm with you on the ouchy-head part, overall the Spellplague seems like a questionable move, but let's see what D&D 5.0 is gonna bring (which seems to have FR and Greyhawk for sure).

If you love soaring battles and high magic, Richard Baker tells a fantastic tale in The Last Mythal: https://www.amazon.com/Last-Mythal-Forgotten-Realms-Trilogy-ebook/dp/B0053CTMZ4

Finally, for a one shot, Monte Cook's The Glass Prison is awesome! https://www.amazon.com/Last-Mythal-Forgotten-Realms-Trilogy-ebook/dp/B0053CTMZ4
