While slavery actually tended to harm poor whites they were willing to support it because it meant there was a social class lower than their own. IE no matter how poor I become I will never be as low as a slave. If slaves become free, then suddenly that former slave is equal to you. It is also extremely tied in with race based slavery, which is what slavery became starting in the late 17th century.
Its a complex topic.

Also note that poor whites were willing to preserve a slave society because they were stuck in it even if it didnt benefit them. IE in a slave rebellion slaves arent going to differentiate between owner and non-owner.
