In this case the cop is right. Using a GoPro mount on your helmet is a violation of federal law:

CFR Sec. 571.218 says:

S5.5 Projections: "A helmet shall not have any rigid projections inside its shell. Rigid projections outside any helmet's shell shall be limited to those required for operation of essential accessories, and shall not protrude more than 0.20 inch (5 mm)."

It's not the fact that he was recording, but what he was recording with. By design a mount for a GoPro goes either on front or on top of the helmet and sticks out a couple inches. That violates the law.

Get you a side mounted camera to avoid this. I like the Polaroid XS100.

Why do my comments keep disappearing from this thread...

Has anyone tried this Polaroid camera? Trying to decide between that and the Roam.

edit: Oh, I have to replace the Amazon link with a different one and then edit it back in for the post to show up. Cool.

Huh...guess it is Polaroid. Goes to show how much I pay attention to the camera itself.

Link

I had gotten it in a Flash Deal a couple years ago and bought the dash mount.

There are already action camera for less.

One is the SJ4000, which includes the camera and most of the various mounts included for ~$100.

I only got it after watching the video @ Lady blamed me for running a red light. The video doesn't lie. [0:50]

There is even knock off version for $60ish too.

Also there is the Poloroid. http://www.amazon.com/Polaroid-Extreme-Waterproof-Mounting-Included/dp/B00A81SXHI/ref=zg_bs_7161074011_8

Either way, I would watch the Top Sellers list @ http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/electronics/7161074011/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_e_1_4_last

Go pro is still #1-#5. If some other camera creep up, then they have real competition.

This is a cheap polaroid XS100.
You don't have to worry for vibrations with a GoPro. Go look for footage on joetjoep.

I've been using the polaroid xs100 it's waterproof right out of the box and includes helmet and bar mounts. Better battery life rating than the cheaper model gopros. some gripes though: only 32gb limit on the SD card, no loop recording and no way to know how much battery is left. I just plug it into my PC every other day to charge and delete files.

Sure, HERE is an Amazon link for the one I own and can vouch for. There is also a newer WiFi version which is basically the same thing plus wifi, although I've never used it considering the battery life on mine I think unless you really, really need to be able to frame your shots with your phone or something then save yourself the money and get the wifi-less one.

Granted, this is the "top of the line" for the Polaroid action cam's there is even cheaper ones with lesser specs to be had for really very cheap.

I use a Polaroid XS100 with a suction cup mount (a separate purchase)

Resolution and features. Unless you really want to capture HD quality driver interaction, the less expensive models will suffice.

There are a lot of cameras flooding the market, all quite similar, basically just a rebadge of a basic model. $100 and change.

These benefit from the ability to mount/secure directly against the helmet.

The one /u/mjm1138 mentions and /u/GammaGlobulin has linked to is a rebranded Polaroid camera much like the MetroFlash e360. I've been very happy with my MetroFlash - it's a good camera. The monoprice one should be work well too.

Here's an Amazon.com (instead of .ca) for $140
http://www.amazon.com/Polaroid-XS100-Waterproof-Mounting-Included/dp/B00A81SXHI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370727372&sr=8-1&keywords=Polaroid+XS100

For that price I'd rather pay up to the GoPro I think just for the availability of accessories if nothing else.

Do it! I picked up a Polaroid XS100 and a suction cup mount and it's helped me a TON. You pick up so many little things and bad habits on video that you don't necessarily have time to think about on the ice.
