Democracy itself is just a point on the same continuum. Just a parameter shift (a=0.7 instead a=0.69) from dictatorship. The exceptionalism Americans have about their democracy mostly comes from keeping the economics and politics of political economics separated at all levels of thought. You can not actually separate them. But keeping them separate means that democracy is completely separate from "other forms" in a very exceptional way.
This is a negligent representation of taxes and the externalities they provide under the advanced form of civilization we live in today.
