I would get a full x-pen and just leave a couple of the panels accordion-folded together on one side to keep the extra out of the way. They're useful tools to have around anyways. I have this one in the 48inch version with a door, and have used it in so many different ways over the years. It's a round pen, a long rectangular pen, a space buffer around a crate, two small side-by-side pens, a fence between rooms where a baby gate won't work, an air lock, a guide around weave poles, ... the list goes on.

If you're really space constrained or really don't want extra panels folded up by the door, you could unhook the extras panels with pliers or use a more furniture-like freestanding gate like this (I don't have any personal experience with that particular product, but it illustrates the option).

I use this gate: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0043XCX0U/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And because it's wood, I just knocked one of the rails out to make a space for the cat to go through. It's not a good gate for putting across a wide doorway, but it's perfect for putting around things. When it's folded into a square or u-shape it's hard to knock over.
