To start, buy this set. They're silicone, cheap, and perfectly shaped.

Have you thought about an inflatable plug? My personal difficulty with plugs, especially glass, with not-skinny necks (which I think is what you're talking about?) Is that the thickness makes them prone to coming out. I specially have this glass one from Amazon and the little bugger won't stay put for more than about five minutes. Much better, for my body, to insert something comfortably narrow and then pump it up to get that stretch you're looking for.
