It not only protects against surges, but also miswired pedestals, low or high voltage, out of range frequencies, open neutral, and open ground. When you first plug your trailer in, it analyzes the power before turning on, so it won't allow your trailer to be damaged. The EMS-HW30C $240 on Amazon, which sounds expensive, but it's great protection for extremely expensive equipment on your trailer.
It was the first thing I installed in my new trailer this year. It took me maybe an hour and a couple of feet of 10/2 Romex. I was able to put it in the space under my lower bunk, which is where my shore power comes in, and I fished the display wire up above the tank monitor which is in my bathroom.
If you don't want to go with a hardwired one for whatever reason, they do make a portable version. The downside to the portable one is that it could be a theft target, or you could forget it at the campground, or forget to install it. I like the hardwired one - it's always there and always on to protect my trailer (although you can shut it off via the switch if you want to), and I like having the display so I can see the voltage, current draw, frequency, and any errors it's seen.
This is what I installed in my RV. They make external ones that are cheaper, but they can also grow legs or be forgotten. Another nice feature of the internal model is that you can check your AC input from within the RV.
