For me it was Promise of Blood. I liked the world, the characters and the story. Its a thick book but it didn't seem like it all as I was reading it. I know I've got gold when that happens.

I already recommended this on another thread but Brian McClellan has a great series called "The Powder Mage Trilogy" that has two books out already with a third one coming out in February.

The best way I can describe it is imagine if the French Revolution had Magic. It's really good. Lots of military and political drama mixed in with fantasy elements and magic fights.

EDIT: Here's a link to book one if you are interested.

I got $75 in Amazon gift cards yesterday, so I went and bought some books! (Shocking, I know)

First off is Fire & Blood. I do not need to say anything about that.

The Hanged Man: A Story of Miracle, Memory, and Colonialism in the Middle Ages looks to be a really interesting book examinging how a hanged man's supposed resurrection examines the crossover between Medieval religion, colonialism, and cultural exchange.

I mostly just read medieval fantasy, so Promise of Blood looks like a good way for me to see the other type of fantasy out there.

Oh, and Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology looks like a hell lot of fun.

No idea when I will get to reading any of this. I have just started on Chronicles of the Black Company, and I have a small pile of unfinished books I need to get through. Ah well, the reader's life.

I haven't read anything good in years and the things I have read are usually due to finding new books for my kids or reading the books that have been adapted to tv/film.

One of my all time favorite series was from Robin Hobb. Starting with Assassin's Apprentice. This was a difficult read for me at the time, but I loved the story behind the characters.

I started reading less fantasy after reading Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Millennial Series. I read these after watching the original films. It is fantastic. Just don't buy the fourth book, it wasn't even written by him as he has been dead for a while now.

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. I didn't start reading those until Game of Thrones premiered on HBO.

Now for some really old school, Dragonlance by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. The fourth book came out years later and was fantastic. I have read more than a few of the side stories, but the main books are the best in my opinion, probably would not hold up well today.

Currently, I have The Martian by Andy Weir and Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan waiting for me to read.

The Five People You meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom is a book that I consider a must read. I don't consider it a spiritual book, but it did change my perspective on how I view my life in this world.

I'm pretty big into old* school fantasy. I've read a ton of warhammer books and really enjoyed them. I also enjoyed The Dwarves and Powder Mage series. I might delve into historical fiction this summer too.
