What climate will you be backpacking in and what conditions will the trails be in?
I use these: http://www.amazon.com/Propper-Mens-Lightweight-Tactical-Pant/dp/B00DCJPDPI
They are thick which comes in real handy if you are moving through poison oak or prickly plants. However, they're heavy.
These are real nice if it's hot and plants are not overgrowing the trails, which seems to be a pretty common combination in some of the arid places near me: http://www.rei.com/product/861970/rei-sahara-cargo-pants-mens-30-inseam
I've used the Propper Lightweight Tactical Pants for around five years and they have done really well. You can buy them on Amazon and they come in a variety of colors.
