I loved that stick, I have a PS3 controller with one just like it, but it's a d-pad.

It's not a replacement for an analog stick, tho, not even close.

I see this all the time and want to get you one, but $40 is just out of my budget. I keep looking through Amazon for something good, but cheaper - but alas, the price to pay for any good controller these days just seems to be $40+. I keep looking at the PS3 Versus Controller, but it doesn't have reassuring reviews...

I'd be willing to pay up to $25 if you find something worth it.

I completely forgot that they made generic versions. The ps3 one is the cheapest at $16ish, the 360 version will run you closer to $30.

Sweet that you picked the game up. Here's a link to the discord to find matches/learn things : https://discord.gg/6qR2CQy

FYI that pad is HORRIBLE IMO. I switched to that after my older one broke and couldn't stand it. I went back to a standard ps3 controller for a while since I hated that thing so much. I've got a Hori V3 SA Kai now and will never go back to a pad, but I don't think switching actually helped me play better. If you are alright with a pad, then stick with it.

If you have a 360 or PS3 controller lying around give it a try with your example keys there.

If you're looking to invest, see if you can find a PC pad or a fightpad (example: http://www.amazon.com/PS3-Versus-Controller-Playstation-3/dp/B0051MQK6K/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1376331889&sr=1-1&keywords=fight+stick ) with 6 face buttons.

This is a dirt cheap stick, but it should be moddable if you want to upgrade buttons or the joystick in your future. http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Arcade-Fighting-Joystick-Playstation-3/dp/B0015PHMFU/ref=sr_1_11?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1376331889&sr=1-11&keywords=fight+stick

I am a keyboard user so you should still do research before making a decision!

Here's a tip from your friendly intermediate wants-to-start-playing-in-tournaments-by-next-year Fighting game player: An Arcade stick won't necessarily make you better, and it isn't necessarily the better option. A lot of people when first entering the Fighting Game community, me included at first, see the pros all playing with arcade sticks and see them dominating in tournaments. Naturally, a lot of people assume that's the way to go and to just ignore controller. However, look at it this way:

The people that dominate in tournaments grew up playing in arcades. They prefer that layout, and thus they use arcade sticks.

It's all a matter of preference. The only thing that an arcade stick will make you better at is "plinking" which is a technique used only in SF4 and SFxTK, and even then it isn't important.

If you think you can learn better on controller, go for it. If you're like me and think an arcade stick is more comfortable, I highly recommend getting either the Hori Fighting Stick Mini 3 or getting a Qanba Q1 (If they ever get restocked)

Both sticks are cheaper than average yet still of good quality. If you're willing to spend that tiny bit more, you could get a Hori fighting Stick V3 for high quality and reliability. A little more from that and you can get MadCatz sticks, which are really good too.

Or, you can take a third option and try out a PDP Fightpad Which, while looking weird, actually work quite well and I have a friend who uses them as his main method of control.

Explore your options! Arcade stick may not be for you, try around and see what you're comfortable with. Just don't be like me and buy a cheap arcade stick... I bought a "Mayflash" stick and it works fine and does the job well, but it's reliability is known to be poor (Mine's lasted longer than two years, which apparently is a miracle) and overall just feel cheap (Which can be kinda annoying/distracting, but you may be able to get over it better than I can)

Hope I helped!

You can get a emulator front end for pc which works great it's also much easier to play mame aka arcade games on pc vs retro pie and obviously youu have more storage, like someone said above stay away from the packages of controllers, first those things should be 5 bucks a piece, not 80 for 3. Plus you don't want nes controller if you're emulating because you have access to so many consoles and with different controller layouts it's best to get one to suit your needs perfect. If you want to go cheap I'd honestly suggest this controller you can find it cheaper usually around 10 bucks PS3 Versus Controller https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0051MQK6K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_XgOCzb45T1KKH
I use it as my player two but honestly you'd be better off getting a couple of those. But since you're willing to spend 80 on garbage might as well spend it on something quality? I'd get one of the above controllers, and do what I did and get the best of the best for yourself Imo this is the best

Both work on retropie as well and I use them to emulate on my pc and retropie and I couldn't be happier.

I can't comment on how good or bad it is, but I'd get it on amazon since its the same price with cheaper or free shipping.

It has some pretty bad reviews, though.

Have you considered an arcade stick? http://www.amazon.com/PS3-Fighting-Stick-V3-Playstation-3/dp/B0057WDBHA/ref=dp_cp_ob_vg_title_0

It's a lot more expensive but they really are nice.

I have a PDP Versus Controller that I use for my Retropie. It's very clicky, and has a nice layout for Genesis, 32X and SegaCD games too.
