You could try to integrate a PS3 Keyboard. It could make a world of difference if you are concerned about type chatting. If not I suggest getting a bluetooth for your phone and connecting to skype/vent/ts on your phone.
Here is the best and by far the most convenient keyboard that is super easy to use.
Easy solution is any wireless USB keyboard will work. In fact if you hook up a keyboard/mouse you can even switch the interface to use those instead of the controller for everything. Not just typing messages.

I use this wireless USB mainly, and love it. I got mine on a deal but even full price it is only $30. It's light, easy to turn on off, works with ps3 and I haven't had to change the batteries in over a year.

It hooks onto your PS3 controller, is minorly intrusive and will allow easy typing/chat. It also has limited mouse functionality (the keys become a touchpad if you press a certain button). You use your thumbs for the typing so very similar to phones.

I would put getting a keyboard as a must. It makes your quality of life so much better as a PS3 user. I have this one http://www.amazon.com/PS3-Wireless-Keypad-Playstation-3/dp/B001ENPDJA/ but also have another Logitech full size. I don't need the full size one anymore as it was more helpful at game launch when I was explaining dungeon mechanics to people.
Another upgrade I would suggest that is def not necessary but makes a world of difference for later in the game is to update to a SSHD in your PS3. I can also confirm that it works with Xpadder. I tried it this morning, and it works perfectly. There is no way to make custom mappings with the wrapper, and this seems to be a great solution. I'm using it for mouse input, and I'm in the process of working on a multi-layered profile, that lets you do everything you can with a mouse and keyboard, and its going well so far. I've got nearly everything but typing figured out. I've got mouse w/ 3 buttons, scrolling, arrow keys, windows key for window management, escape and ctrl+w for exiting windows and tabs, and then behind a toggle, I've got media controls, and a calculator hotkey with all of the numbers mapped to the right stick with large deadzone. I can't figure out how to launch the on-screen keyboard from a button press, and then it would be nice to also have navigation of the keyboard with arrows, rather than mouse movement and clicks. I guess the only real solution is something like THIS, but I'd have to get a usb bluetooth adapter, as the internal one I use, is overridden by the controller drivers. >.>

There's not voice chat to my knowledge, I don't think party chat is a thing on PS3, right? I plan to get one of these. They're pretty cheap.

At least for me, the major advantage of a keyboard and mouse, is the accuracy of the mouse, not all the buttons on the keyboard. While nice, there's enough buttons on a modern controller. Also this was a thing for PS3.
