This page is part of a Punisher comic called Born which can be found here or here (includes an extra story)

Forget about continuity, universes, timelines, etc; it's all very confusing, even to creators/fans. The best way to jump in is to just start reading.

How much time do you have for comics? The answer determines how expansive recommendations are. Regardless, don’t try to read everything. First appearances & early origins are not always good starting points—older comics can be an acquired taste for modern audiences. Remember, there are so many other great characters/stories/publishers to explore (and not all comics are about superheroes).

Think about your favorite stories from other media. What you might like to read in a comic? Are you more interested in good storytelling or becoming a Marvel knowledge nerd?

Creative teams change often and characters get re-worked e.g. I never cared for Hawkeye until Matt Fraction’s run. Focus on well-received and relatively self-contained stories. Pick an interesting character/team and seek their “greatest hits”. You may encounter the occasional unexplained reference/character/event—just ride along (Wiki if necessary).

Modern Marvel characters/teams:

Title | Writer | Note
---|---|---
Alias (Jessica Jones) | Bendis
Ultimates 1 & 2 (Avengers) | Mark Millar | Ultimate
Avengers / New Avengers | Jonathan Hickman | Hickman 2
Captain America | Ed Brubaker
Captain Marvel | Kelly Sue DeConnick
Daredevil (1979) | Frank Miller | Daredevil 1
Daredevil | Bendis | Daredevil 2
Doctor Strange: The Oath | Brian K. Vaughn
Fantastic Four / FF | Jonathan Hickman | Hickman 1
Hawkeye | Matt Fraction
Immortal Iron Fist | Brubaker & Fraction
Inhumans | Paul Jenkins
Iron Man: Extremis | Warren Ellis | Iron Man 1
Invincible Iron Man | Matt Fraction | Iron Man 2
Marvels (Marvel History) | Kurt Busiek
Moon Knight | Warren Ellis
Ms. Marvel | G. Willow Wilson
Planet Hulk | Greg Pack | Hulk 1
Punisher Max | Garth Ennis
Thor | Jason Aaron
Ultimate Spider-man | Bendis | Ultimate
Vision | Tom King
New X-Men | Grant Morrison | X-Men 1
Astonishing X-Men | Joss Whedon | X-Men 2
Uncanny X-Force | Rick Remender | X-Men 6

Events/crossovers can be fun and/or tedious. They are most appreciated by readers well-versed in relevant continuity. Generally, the best non-event comics integrate these seamlessly or avoid them entirely (notwithstanding editorial/executive mandates). Regardless, you may want to familiarize with major plot points.

Modern Marvel events/crossovers:

Title | Writer | Note
---|---|---
Avengers Disassembled | Bendis |
Secret War | Bendis |
House of M | Bendis | X-Men 2.5
Annihilation | Abnett, Lanning, Giffen | Cosmic
Civil War | Mark Millar |

Annihilation: Conquest | Abnett, Lanning, Giffen | Cosmic
Messiah Complex | Brubaker, Kyle, Yost, et al. | X-Men 3

For Marvel Comics

How to Get Into Comic Books (13:40) | Patrick Willems

Consider your intent/commitment. Think about your favorite stories/characters from TV, movies, games, books, etc. Do you seek quality storytelling or encyclopedic Marvel knowledge? Plan to collect? What time/resources are available i.e. how many comics could/should be read before burning out?

Don’t try to read everything—there’s too much. Forget about “catching up”, continuity, universes, and timelines; it's all very confusing, even to creators/fans. Older comics can be an acquired taste for modern audiences, so first appearances/early origins may not be the best starting points. Creative teams change often, characters get re-worked, and origins are re-told (e.g. I never cared for Hawkeye until Matt Fractions’ run).

Pick an interesting character/team and seek their “greatest hits”. Don’t get stuck “preparing”, just start reading. Focus on well-received, relatively self-contained, and complete stories. > Collecting PUNISHER (2000) #1-12, PUNISHER (2001) #1-7 and #13-37, PUNISHER KILLS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE, and material from MARVEL KNIGHTS DOUBLE SHOT #1.

This doesn't have MAX.

This one seems to be the start of the series you are looking for. It starts with the Born prequel, then goes on to have the "current day" stories. This one up to the one marked as Vol. 4 should complete the Ennis Max run.

Kings Comics in Sydney have it available on their website. It says it ships in 10-14 days, which normally means it's either in their warehouse or they'll have to order it in from the distributor, but it probably means it wasn't banned.

The trade's nearly a decade old - it's possible it's just sold out. I believe this volume of the Complete Collection contains the first two trades, and came out earlier last year so it should be much easier to find.

Punisher Max might be a little hardcore but I loved reading through it around his age.

Other good suggestions would be Hellboy, The walking dead, Eat of West, or Omega Men. Those are some of my 18 yo brother's faves.

Punisher MAX by Garth Ennis

Amazing Spider-Man by Dan Slott

Thunderbolts by Warren Ellis and Mike Deodato

Superman For All Seasons

Green Lantern by Geoff Johns This particular link is to the omnibus and it may look intimidating but I guarantee you it's on of the best runs from DC and comics period. The site Tales of Wonder is also great and I recommend their business.

Introduction to Comics

How to Get Into Comic Books (13:40) | Patrick Willems

Consider your intent/commitment. Think about your favorite shows, movies, books, etc. Reading primarily for enjoyment or encyclopedic knowledge? Collecting? Have the time/resources to read 50 or 500 comics per character?

Don’t try to read everything at once. There’s too much. Forget about catching up, continuity, universes, etc. for now. Older comics can be an acquired taste for modern audiences, so they aren’t necessarily ideal starting points. Writers change often, characters get re-worked, and origins are re-told. Remember, there are many great characters, creators, publishers, etc. to explore.

Pick an interesting character/team and seek their most popular/acclaimed stories. Focus on self-contained, complete stories in one corner of the universe. There will be unexplained references/characters, just persevere or Wiki. Don’t let the tangled web of shared-universe comics overwhelm you. Think of it like solving a jigsaw puzzle one small piece at a time until you finally see the big picture.

Discover your preferences and let them guide you. Don’t get stuck preparing/over-analyzing, just start reading. Do you like/dislike old/new comics? Specific writers/genres? Cartoony/realistic art? Familiar/weird concepts? References/self-contained? All-ages/mature content? Follow these instincts. Didn’t understand a reference? Maybe read that next.

The best place to start would probably be with the Punisher Max Complete Collections by Garth Ennis.

It's old enough tracking down individual issues might be hard, but here's the beginning of the collection on Amazon

Garth Ennis wrote the definitive Punisher. His run on Punisher MAX is not only far and away my favorite Punisher work, it's one of my favorite runs in comics period. That collection has volumes 1 and 2 of the 10 volume run he wrote, as well as a miniseries called Punisher: Born that recounts Frank Castle's time in Vietnam. Those ten volumes are incredible feats of storytelling and in my opinion no one will ever write Frank Castle better.

You can also get the individual trades (1-10) for around $7-$10/each used on Amazon. I've given away so many copies of these TPBs I've lost count!

I started with the Ennis Version/ The Max Series.. there is a good "starter pack"

https://www.amazon.com/Punisher-Max-Complete-Collection-Vol/dp/1302900153/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_14_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=T3NX8S2Y4TMKJNHAJTMR

There are 4 Volumes.. This should get you hooked

u/psycho-logical · 2 pointsr/Marvel

This seems to be the best value. It contains the prequel series and 12 other issues:

The Complete Collection Vol 1 just came out recently and it contained Born #1-4 and Punisher #1-12. Volume 2 will contain Punisher #13-30. If you're already read Ennis' run, you aren't missing anything (though my only experience wth the character is through the first complete collection that just came out).

punisher v 5 by ennis

Part 1

The rest of the Max (Ennis) collections cover real events and organized criminals. The Franks that you see worked black ops to take down the worst.

u/AdddY13 · 1 pointr/Preacher

Punisher Max by Garth Ennnis is currently being reprinted in four tpbs. I am really glad about that because I had not had the chance to read the complete run originaly. It is not only Ennis at his best but also some of the most adult and gut-wrenching storytelling in all media, not only comic books. "Born" and "Slavers" especially can not be recommended enough. I do disagree with you on Aaron's run however. While it may not have retained the emotional punch of Ennis' writing it still was a very well crafted story and a fitting end for the Max run. I am not the biggest fan of Dillon's art aswell but is very clear and dynamic and his most consistent work in my opinion.
