Queen City Jazz?

> In Verity's world, nanotech plagues decimated the population after an initial renaissance of utopian nanotech cities. Growing up on an isolated farm, she finds her happy life changing course when Blaze, the only young man in the community and Verity's best friend, is shot. With Blaze's body wrapped in a nanotech cocoon, Verity sets off on a quest to the Enlivened City of Cincinnati. It is a place of legend, where huge bio-engineered bees carry information through the streets and enormous nanotech flowers burst from the tops of strange buildings. It is the place where Blaze might be brought back from the brink of death. But Cincinnati is a city of dreams turned into nightmares, endlessly reliving the fantasies of its creator, a city that Verity must rule--or die.

The second book in the series is called Mississippi Blues. Maybe you read that one...

If you are looking for other genre books set in Cincinnati, these are a few I'm familiar with.

Have you read Mosaic 17K? It's a cyberpunk book based in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati. Really captures the area IMO. Good stuff.

Also Queen City Jazz, which doesn't really fit comfortably in a genre. Not really my cup of tea, but might be worth the read. Very surreal. Has kind of a 1970s sci-fi vibe to it.

And the Kim Harrison Hollows novels, which are urban fantasy. IMO, she didn't capture the area at all well. It came across as super generic midwest large city. And she described the town I live in all wrong, not even a little bit right. Possibly the most well known series of books set in the area.

This is a nice start. The characters are believable and the language doesn't feel forced. The relationship between Rose and Aurian is authentic, you haven't fallen into the trap of explaining everything in the narrative (instead using dialogue as a plot device/means of developing back story) and more than that, I'm interested in what might be about to happen!

Couple of little things really, I left a note about something towards the end of the piece, where you could be clearer about what you mean, and it might be worth re-reading it, and making sure that everything is tidy. There were a couple of phrases - really, nothing too bad at all - but reading through it again, they could have been a bit stronger. Honestly, though? Good start - solid premise, strong character foundations, interesting setting, and... well, I'm interested!

I have a suggestion for you to read - 'Queen City Jazz', by Kathleen Ann Goonan. Look at the relationships between the characters at the beginning; they're children of varying ages, and she handles it very nicely. Furthermore, pay close attention to how she introduces the plot. More than that, it's a good read! Find it here
