If you have to use HDMI for your monitor, I'd say just get something like this HDMI to DP cable. It's less than $10 and you plug in HDMI into your monitor and DP into your graphics card. That's what I'm doing because I'm using the VR computer with a fairly old TV that needs HDMI input.

Had sorta this problem, 1070 has only one HDMI and my monitor only accepts HDMI. I bought a cord that was display port on one end and HDMI on the other and it worked perfectly for my monitor. Now the WMR headset stays plugged into the HDMI.

The display comes with DVI cables. It has DVI and HDMI inputs. The GPU has 1 DVI, 1 HDMI, and 3 DP outputs. You could get 2 DP to HDMI cables and run 2 displays on DP and one on DVI or you could get 3 DP to HDMI cables and run all 3 displays on DP for the best consistency. It's not a huge deal to have one display on DVI and 2 on DP, I actually do it this way myself, but I've had little bouts of weirdness here and there where the one display on DVI looked just a little different than the others.

I doubt that, and it probably also depends on whether you have a launch Rift S or a newer model. I have both and my USB 3.0 cable matters 6 foot cables (I have 3, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C7S2FRE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) which work on my launch Rift S aren't working for my new Rift S (manufactured August 2019). You need an adapter or a cable. I suppose your card is like this, there is a direct HDMI output, use that to connect one of your monitors, and then buy and adapter or cable from DVI to HDMI, or DisplayPort to HDMI cable or adapter, whatever is cheaper or in your store.

If you are just using a 1080p TV, you can just get a passive cable and plug the headset directly into the GPU.

That should work fine if the other monitor can take HDMI. You can also get an all in one cable too.

For the 2nd monitor you just need a DP or DVI to HDMI adapter. Don't get a DP or DVI to VGA adapter, since it would need to be an active adapter that actively converts the signal from digital to analog. Something like this would be fine.

Your upgrade looks like it will be way cheaper than mine was.

I got the Rift on sale for $350, but my PC was like 10 years old with only a new SSD in it.

Ended up getting an i5-9600K + MSI Z390 Gaming Edge for $470, 16 GB of RAM, Cooler Master 212 EVO which turned out to be huge and a huge pain in the ass to install (I recommend watching the video on that page that I didn't notice until after I installed the thing with only it's Ikea-like instructions.), but that big fan means it's far quieter than the tiny stock fans processors usually come with. The i5-9600K does not come with a fan either, so I had no choice and this was the most popular one on NewEgg.

Also got myself an MSI Gaming X GTX 1070 used on Ebay for $270. And because it only has one HDMI port, I decided to use that for the RIFT because it was less risky, and got a Displayport to HDMI cable which supports audio for my monitor which has the speakers built in and does not have a Displayport connector. Only afterward while taking my PC apart however did I realize I had the HMDI cable plugged into my old card with a DVI adapter, and the Gaming X has a DVI port as well, so I could have saved the money on the cable. :(

Also at the last minute I had to run out and grab a Corsair 750W power supply because my perfectly good Coolermaster 750W power supply did not have an 8 pin connector for my CPU. Of course, when I got it home it did not have the 4 pin connector and the motherboard has both a 4 pin and 8 pin and I assumed both would be needed, but I gave it a shot and just having the 8 pin was fine. But now I wonder if just having the 4 pin would also have been fine. The damn manual doesn't have a thing to say about it being okay to just use one of them, but being an electrical engineer I have to assume they're both tied to the same rail on the board, so I'm just gaining a bit more copper to lower the voltage drop if I were to connect a 4 pin as well, and the system seems perfectly stable, so perhaps they included the second connector to help with overclocking. I dunno.

Anyway, final tally including the Rift without a third sensor was $1,339.

And if you're wondering why I didn't go with AMD, well, I could have but when I priced it out, I wasn't actually going to save that much. And the Intel seemed like it would perform better with both games and applications and would just be less likely to have any issues like the Vive and its wireless solution do with AMD processors.

Part of the reason the AMD was not much cheaper is the same MSI motherboard would have been more expensive as an AMD variant and while the AMD included a cooler, the Cooler Master one was only $30 and had a bigger fan which meant it would likely be quieter. Though the AMD does run at a lower wattage, so it could be a toss up. All I know is my old PC sounded like a jet engine when I started doing any heavy lifting with 3D graphics, and it was still kinda noisy otherwise, but now its super quiet and even when running 3D apps that MSI card which I specifically chose because it's one of the quietest, was indeed really quiet.

Speaking of the 1070, my god that is a monster of a card! I barely fit it in my case. And my case is a full size tower. But it has extra 3.5" bays down the bottom where I have my hard drives installed and I had to move them down some more to get it to fit and it only barely slid in behind the metal frame of the drive bay.

Only other thing to mention is while I had no problem fitting my two ram sticks on the motherboard, that Cooler Master cooler's fan would probably collide with one of the ram sticks if I were to install four in there. I think the fan can slide up and down on the cooler though, so perhaps as long as you have low profile ram, you could slide it up a smidge or two to make it fit. Something to consider if you think you may eventually want 32 or 64GB of ram.

Since VGA is Analog and DP is Digital, you usually need a powered adapter. Also, all the adapters I've found have been DP to VGA, not the other way around. When dealing with VGA the direction is important. I think you could possibly do it with a VGA to HDMI adapter.

If it's the same as my 1070 there's only one hdmi, the others are display ports. If that's the case just get a cable like this one for your monitor.

You're trying to plug two DP outputs from different devices into one monitor correct? And switch between them.

That monitor can take a DP and an HDMI input so you could use a DP to HDMI cable like this.

Doesn't work. Have a powered splitter and rift just would not light up. Needs to be plugged directly to GPU HDMI port. I am sure Dragonfrost has other ports on his GPU that he can buy an adapter to run his TV from. I have this to run my Sony Bravia direct from display port on GPU:

This computer has a VGA port and two Displayports for monitors. You'll need to buy a Displayport to HDMI cable to make this computer to work for you.

Get two of these monitors and two Displayport to HDMI cables to connect the monitors to the computer. Monitors that come with Displayports and Displayport cables are much more expensive than these well reviewed devices.

First, questions.

• Why are your monitors all using different connections? Are they all different models? If they're the same, why not just have them all use Displayport?
  
• How far away will the TV be away from the tower? Would you need a cable longer than 6ft to connect them? Considering that the cable will need a good amount of slack for cable management, as well.
  
  Now, a suggestion.
  
  
• If your monitors all have Displayport... ports, just hook them all up to Displayport. If for some reason you can't, or just really don't want to, you'll need a way to connect your HDMI TV to a Displayport. You don't even have to get an adapter box, you can just use a wire with HDMI on one end, Displayport on the other.
  
  Anyway, some options.
  
  
• Software Switch - I'm assuming you use Windows 10. If you do, you can just switch your active screen without having to do anything more than using a Keyboard shortcut. Display Switch (Windows button + P) will allow you to quickly switch your display option, allowing you to quickly turn your TV's input on or off. However, I don't know if this will mess with any of your display settings, it might. If it does, you'd have to fiddle with the other two screens' settings every time you switch back to your desk. If you do this option, by the way, and you keep a keyboard on your rig, you can just use the shortcut to switch between displays.
  
  
• Hardware Switch - An adapter box that switches your output between two screens (like this, for example). You'd have to have to physically press the button each time you switch between your desk and TV (though they do make ones that have a remote), but this way you wouldn't have to worry about any software issues. You'd connect this to your main monitor and the TV, and simply press the button to switch between them. Your PC would re-adjust the resolution for you (it would detect that the screen its outputting to changes), but other than that it wouldn't have an affect on it, it would just think that your middle monitor is now the TV. You'd still only be projecting the game screen to one display at a time, so it wouldn't have any affect on the game's performance.
  
  
• Software Mirroring - Exactly as it sounds. One of the options in the Display Switch panel is Duplicate, which mirrors your main monitor's output to your TV. You could just leave this on, and just turn your TV on or off as needed. The only problem is that since your system would be outputting the game to two displays, it may have a negative affect on the system's performance. This is the option I don't recommend.
  
  
• Hardware Splitter - A box that takes one input and mirrors it to two outputs (example). It wouldn't be a switch, it would just constantly mirror the output to two displays. The difference is that your GPU would only be making one output, the box is just sending the signal to two displays. This way, it shouldn't have an affect on your PC's performance. Just turn the TV on and off as needed.
  
  
• Separate System - This is the extreme option, having a separate PC for your rig entirely. If the only games you play on your PC are racing sims, you could just use your current PC for the rig and have a new PC for your desk, its specs depending on what kind of work you do with it. While this is, again, the logical extreme solution... it's not necessarily unreasonable to have separate systems for work and play.

  ^(- None of these options should introduce lag, but if you get a splitter or switch box, make sure they're noted with low-latency and check the reviews.)
  
  ^(- You could stream the game to your TV with something like the Steam Link... but your TV is in the same room as the PC-- hell from the sounds of it, it's within the same arm's reach as the TV. Streaming it is alright if the system and the TV were across the house, but its a needlessly complicated and clunky idea in this situation.)
  
  ^(- If you do use a hardware solution, keep in mind that the small consumer boxes can only use cables of a reasonable length. Generally speaking, you shouldn't use a cable longer than 9ft from the box to your TV, or the wire won't carry the signal to the display. I think you're confused. The signal is the same. If the display supports it, the video card should be able to push it just fine as a custom resolution. You can get a cable which has hdmi on one end and dvi or display port on the other end. Because the signal is the same, and the display supports it, there's no reason you can't use a custom refresh rate.

I run a GTX 960 that only has 1 HDMI port and 3 Dataports; I have the vive connected to the HDMI, a HDMI > DP connector to my monitor, and a HDMI to DP connector to my "Headless Ghost" (a little piece of hardware the size of a plug that creates a fake monitor) works good.

You can only use the output from the top card. I'm assuming the other inputs are displayport? So just use a displayport -> HDMI adapter. This one should work

My monitor has HDMI, VGA, and DVI-D and graphics card has 3 DP's and 1 HDMI and it is very important for me to have 144hz.

You're not listing card model or why you're describing your HDMI cable as dedicated. Cards with only one HDMI port and no other outputs are extraordinarily rare... As in essentially non-existent.

Chances are you have multiple open DisplayPort connections which are essentially HDMI with a different connector. At the very least, you would have a DVI port. Converting these to an HDMI monitor costs less than $10.

You're literally ranting about having to spend $10 when you've purchased a luxury device costing hundreds.
